Research cooperation with ICIMB in Krakow
Under a research and development cooperation agreement signed between Silesian University of Technology and the Łukasiewicz Research Network - Institute of Ceramics and Building Materials (ICIMB) in Krakow, joint scientific research in the field of structural glass has begun. The Faculty of Construction at the Silesian University of Technology is represented by Marcin Kozlowski, Ph.D., professor of Silesian University of Technology, and on behalf of ICIMB, Magda Kosmal, Ph.D., Leader of the Glass Research Group.
The research is aimed at analyzing the behavior of glass panes subjected to the impact of a soft body (a two-legged pendulum with a mass of 50 kg) in accordance with PN-EN 12600. The dynamic test simulates the impact of a person on a barrier with different kinetic energy. The elements for testing will be sheets made of layered glass with panes of different thicknesses, and different interlayers (films) of different stiffness and thickness will also be analyzed.
The first stage of the research, conducted in July 2023, involved exploratory testing of samples with different types of glass (annealed and tempered glass) and interlayers (PVB and EVA films). Kinga Zemla, M.Sc., and Bilal Ahmed, M.Sc., Ph.D. students from the Department of Civil Engineering, also participated in the research.
