The daughter of our Employee and Colleague, PhD Marek Węglorz - Alicja Węglorz - in April 2020, at the age of 9, developed type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which pancreatic beta cells responsible for the production and secretion of insulin are destroyed. It is a chronic and incurable disease. Treatment requires tremendous self-discipline from the patient. It is based on continuous insulin delivery and a healthy and balanced diet. A significant support in the treatment of type 1 diabetes is modern technology in the form of an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring systems (CGM). The insulin pump with the CGM system facilitates Alice's daily functioning. Alice's body is growing and developing, so it is very important that fluctuations in glucose levels are as low as possible and not cause damage to other developing organs. Proper treatment minimizes the risk of developing acute complications (hypoglycemia, ketoacidosis) and chronic complications (damage to the kidneys, eyesight, nervous and cardiovascular systems). All obtained funds will be allocated, in accordance with applicable regulations, for the purpose of purchasing and current retrofitting with the necessary interchangeable accessories in the form of punctures, sensors, etc., medical equipment and rehabilitation.

Like any chronic disease, or less elegantly, "incurable disease," type 1 diabetes requires continuous therapy. Therefore, the parents, on the one hand, would like to express their sincere thanks for all the sums donated for the treatment of Alicja's daughter last year, at the same time asking for further support.
