Scientists' Night at the Faculty of Civil Engineering

The another edition of the Scientists' Night took place at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology on October 9, 2021! The final success of this amazing event, during which you could see shows, experiments and take part in various games and competitions, was due to, among others:

1. Student Scientific Association SKN Build Green operating at the Department of Building Structures, RB-2, under the supervision of Barbara Słomka-Słupik, who prepared the following events: Making red clay products, Building Eco-huts from recyclable materials.
The main builders of Eko-Chatka are Artur Kiełczewski (RMT) and Kinga Nawrat, and its originator was Sandra Gabrysiak and Wojciech Popek (RAu). The construction of the Eco-Chatka started a few weeks earlier with the help of Monika Kocur, Wanda Otlik and Paweł Żabierek. The caretakers of the pottery stand were Aleksandra Sadkowska, Monika Kocur and Małgorzata Poloczek.
The Scientists' Night at SKN Build Green will last a few more weeks, because clay products should be dried, fired, glaze applied and fired again. Then the authors of the papers will be asked to collect them. The Eco-Hut has not been completed - it will be used to continue playing the "young builder" and Eco-education in a year!

2. Dawid Cornik, Krzysztof Stebel, Katarzyna Nowak, Krzysztof Grzyb, Maciej Wiśniowski, Jakub Zając: The building and the earthquake, the skyscraper and the earthquake. As part of a fascinating show, the behavior of buildings under the influence of dynamic ground movement was investigated.

3. Magdalena Kowalska, Iwona Dudko-Pawłowska, Małgorzata Jastrzębska: Laboratory of Young Geotechnicians. What do MINECRAFT, a snowman and an earthworm have in common? In reference to the popular MINECRAFT computer game, children and their parents recognized rock-forming minerals, rocks and soil. They learned about the influence of water on the behavior of fine-grained and coarse-grained soils. They also found out who the geotechnician was. It was fun! Karolina Słomińska, a student of the 7th semester of RB, helped in the workshops.

4. Michał Marchacz, Iwona Pokorska-Silva, Beata Wilk-Słomka: Beavers Fibi and Kobo are building a lighthouse.

5. Janusz Belok, Marcelina Olechowska, Agnieszka Szymanowska-Gwiżdż: Does wood absorb like a sponge? What is warm and what is cold? - Beavers Fibi and Kobo will examine building materials.

The people who helped a lot in both of the above events were Dorota Koptas and Victoria Heuchert. Both ladies were preparing a surprise stand, where the participants could make a plaster figurine of the Builder Beaver by themselves.

6. Barbara Cibis, Wojciech Sorociak with the help of Weronika Piecha, Nicole Nowak, Jakub Grądziela and Tadeusz Krasiński prepared a presentation: Stable Ground. Discussion of the methods of soil strengthening in order to adjust technical parameters to the requirements related to the bearing capacity of road structures.
