Scientists of the Silesian University of Technology at the International Conference on Geomatics for Disaster Risk Reduction
From 7 to 10 October 2024 at the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM MY, Sintok, Malaysia) took place the International Conference “Geomatics for Disaster Risk Reduction” and a meeting within the project “Geomatics for Disaster Risk Reduction” (GeoDRR).
The Erasmus PLUS GeoDRR project has been implemented since 2020 by the Consortium: Three European universities (Silesian University of Technology - Poland, UniWA - Greece, University of Alicante - Spain), a consulting-IT company (Novel - Luxembourg) and six universities from South-East Asia (Svay Rieng University and National University of Battanbang - Cambodia, Xavier University and University of the Cordilleras - Philippines, Universiti Sains Malaysia - Malaysia).
Silesian University of Technology is the leader of the GeoDRR project, and since 2022 its coordinator is Dr Eng. Krzysztof Tomiczek from the Department of Geoengineering and Resource Exploitation (, Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation). The aim of the project is to create and open the Master’s Degree “Geomatics for Disaster Risk Reduction” with the necessary laboratory and teaching facilities at six Asian universities.
Silesian University of Technology, apart from the project coordinator Dr Eng. Krzysztof Tomiczek was represented by the team: Dr Hab. Eng. Anna Bluszcz, Dr Eng. Monika Żogała and Dr Marta Matyjaszek.
The opening ceremony of the conference was attended by representatives of the UUM authorities, including H.E. Prof. Dr Ahmad Martadha B Mohamed and H.E. Prof. Dr Osman Ghazali, rectors, deans and representatives of Asian and European universities and representatives of the state and government administration of Malaysia.

Project Coordinator, Dr Eng. Krzysztof Tomiczek read the open letter of Prof. Sebastian Werle, Vice-Rector for Science and International Cooperation at the Silesian University of Technology, addressed to partners in the GeoDRR project and to conference participants. The Polish team delivered lectures and presented the prepared presentations during the poster session.
After two days of the conference, practical workshops and working meetings began. Among other things, the construction and structure of the early warning system against tropical cyclones and tsunamis were introduced during a visit to the Tsunami Gallery - Museum (Kota Kuala Muda region of Kedah, Malaysia), commemorating the tragic tsunami of December 26, 2004.
From 11 to 18 October, the Polish team completed a short-term scientific and didactic internship at Universiti Utara Malaysia. As part of the internship there were lectures and workshops with UUM students as well as working meetings.
