Chemikalia - a successful reactivation

After a thirteen-year break, on Friday, June 21st, the Faculty of Chemistry of the Silesian University of Technology organized Chemikalia again - an event combining science and entertainment.

The charming place behind the Red Chemistry building attracted many people that day. The event was attended by, among others: Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Anna Chrobok, Prof. SUT, director of the College of Studies at the Silesian University of Technology.

The event was held under the slogan "Chemikalia: Your nuclear feast of knowledge!” began in a sporty way - with a volleyball match for the cup of the Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry.

- “The winning team was composed of lecturers and PhD students” - says Agnieszka Kicińska from the Student Science Club of Chemists, who, together with Dr Eng. Anna Byczek-Wyrostek were responsible for organizing the event. – “We decided to organize the event after the huge success of last year's "Grill behind the Grey Building". We heard that our predecessors from the science club had already organized Chemikalia, so we decided to bring it back. We are even more pleased with the turnout, which was great”.

The event organizers prepared a barbecue, sweet refreshments and numerous attractions for parents, students and children. One of them was the "Chain Reaction" game, which involved collecting points for solving chemical puzzles. After collecting stamps from five stands with tasks prepared by each department, the participant took part in the prize draw. In the building of the so-called New Chemistry, a poster session for diploma students was also held that day.

- “We are glad that we have successfully returned to this event. There were parents with children and students who could be interested in chemistry, including through workshops and demonstrations. Moreover, it is an opportunity for students to learn how to transfer knowledge” - explains Dr Hab. Eng. Katarzyna Jaszcz, Prof. SUT, vice-dean for education at the Faculty of Chemistry.

The scientific part, i.e. learning about chemistry from the inside out, aroused great interest. These included workshops and two chemical shows presented by members of the Student Science Club of Chemists. In addition to colourful, impressive, but also safe experiments, there were also experiments with roses and balloons.

- “Together with our science club, we try to show that chemistry is interesting and that studying it does not end with learning, but is also related to interesting experiences, demonstrations, fun and meetings with people. That's why it's worth getting involved in such events”, says Filip Wojtas from the Student Science Club of Chemists.
