Silesian Voivodeship for the weekend

The Silesian Voivodeship is one of the most diverse and attractively located regions in Poland. Once associated with coal and heavy industry, today with nature, tourist attractions, good living conditions, availability of sports and cultural centres.

The location in the southern part of Poland gives the Silesian Voivodeship a unique geographical, historical, and cultural perspective. On the one hand, it is one of the most populated and developed regions in the country. On the other hand, it is full of places where you can commune with nature, such as Jura Krakowsko-Częstochowa, Beskidy Mountains offering great hiking opportunities, the Błędowska Desert, the Siedlecka Desert or Siewierz Mount, from where you can admire the lights of the Katowice Agglomeration in the evening.

Our region is an oasis for sports and recreation enthusiasts. We especially recommend the Silesian Park - a huge recreational complex offering opportunities for all enthusiasts of spending time outdoors - from runners to cyclists and picnic lovers. On its territory there is a zoo, the Museum of the Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park in Chorzów, the cable car “Elka”, the Silesian Planetarium with an innovative projection system allowing to display on a spherical screen about 100 million stars and a place where football legends were born and held unforgettable events full of sports emotions – the Silesian Stadium.

Hiking enthusiasts can go to the Zborów Mountain   in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland (462 m above sea level) from where in good weather you can see the nearby Ogrodzieniec, Morsko, Bobolice or Mirów. For a weekend getaway, the Żar Mountain is ideally suited, from which the landscape of the Little Beskid, the Żywiecki Beskids, the Sola Breakthrough and the dam lake below presents beautifully. It is also a place for extreme sports enthusiasts practicing downhill. It can be reached by the PKL train, and there is a pumped-storage power plant.

Enthusiasts of technology will be interested in the Trail of Technical Monuments. It is a network of industrial objects presenting the industrial history of the Silesian Voivodeship. A must-see is the Guido Mine and the Queen Luiza Adit, which is part of the Coal Mining Museum in Zabrze, as well as the Historic Silver Mine in Tarnowskie Góry - a real treasure of the region inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

While getting to know Silesia, it is also worth keeping in mind impressive castles, such as the Ogrodzieniec Castle in Podzamcze, the Pszczyna Castle, the Piastowski Castle in Racibórz and the Sulkowski Princes’ Castle in Bielsko-Biała.

The ideal way to visit our region is to connect a bicycle with a railway. Interesting suggestions for fans of two wheels are the Bicycle Trail of Eagle Nests, the Ruda Forests and the Lower Oder Land, Panewniki Forests, Murcki Forests, Pszczyna Forests, or the Iron Cycling Trail, which in 2023 won the title of “Polish Wonders 2023”, awarded by National Geographic in the category of the Silesian Voivodeship.

Silesia is recommended not only for the weekend.
