Invitation to the open lecture

On 20th March 2024 at 13:00 in the Philips Auditorium at the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology in Zabrze there will be held an open lecture entitled: “Are we ready for therapy planned and guided by artificial intelligence?” delivered by Jerzy Orkiszewski, President of USPTC and Vice President of Engineering at Cutera.

The presentation will discuss problems related to the introduction of artificial intelligence to real, therapeutic medical devices. As an example, a dermatological laser currently being developed in the United States will be demonstrated. Practical challenges encountered during the design process will be presented. In particular, the following will be discussed:

  • technical problems
  • difficulty in choosing the material for learning the model
  • the process of selecting methods for user interaction with the device
  • problems related to the lack of regulation by government agencies
  • no standards for model validation
  • legal problems
  • ethical challenges

Many of the questions raised during the lecture have not yet been answered clearly. Finding solutions to the problems arising from the application of this innovative technology in therapeutic devices is an interdisciplinary task for the coming years.
