Treasure Week has started! Join scheduled activities!

As part of the celebration of the European City of Science Katowice 2024, thematic weeks are held during which residents, regardless of age or education, can take part in extremely interesting activities. The program includes workshops, lectures and exhibitions.

Treasure Week, which takes place under the watchful eye of scientists from the Silesian University of Technology, Ewa Głuszek M.Sc. and prof. dr hab. Eng. Małgorzata Labus began on Monday, January 8th.

- Due to the fact that the faculty we are associated with is the Faculty of Mining of the Silesian University of Technology, where we deal with treasures hidden in the ground and rocks - this is what we focused on primarily. Many activities will be devoted to these issues. It will be about raw materials, metal ores, minerals, but not only. We treated the topic more broadly; hence the program also includes meetings on other things that are valuable to us, e.g. talents, skills, competences - said Ewa Głuszek M.Sc.

On the first day, in activities organized by scientists from all universities operating in the province of Silesia benefited, among others, pupils of Primary School No. 16 in Mysłowice who came to a demonstration lesson organized at the Museum of Earth Sciences of the University of Silesia. The classes were conducted by geologist dr Zuzanna Wawrzyniak.

- A year ago, we hosted a scientist at school who talked about dinosaurs and the pupils were very impressed. Such lessons are more interesting for pupils than those based on a textbook, so we took advantage of the opportunity and came to the classes - Aleksandra Gumułka, class teacher.

- We talked about what happened in the world during past geological eras, how to study the age of the earth, how to organize in our heads the knowledge about the history of these millions of years and finally we looked at various materials - fossils that remained on the earth. I tried to tell the story in a way that would allow pupils to use the knowledge they already have and expand it with new details, explained dr Wawrzyniak.

The remaining activities on the first day of Treasure Week took place in Katowice.

In Kato Science Corner, dr Dawid Surmik from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Silesia talked about the work of a palaeontologist.

- Some people associate him with Ross from the TV series Friends, others with dinosaurs, and I would like to talk to the meeting participants about these associations. This is certainly a good opportunity to arouse interest in palaeontology to those who are somewhat interested in the subject, but do not know all the possible applications of this scientific discipline - added dr Wawrzynek.

In addition to historical knowledge, yesterday participants of the Treasure Week could participate in workshops on future competences at Rawa Ink in Katowice.

Dr hab. Małgorzata Dobrowolska, prof. SUT conducted leadership skills training, focusing on the presentation of the so-called soft skills of the future.

- I talked about the key competencies of the 4K model, which include critical thinking, creativity, cooperation and, in my opinion, the most important thing - communication. I also

talked about good dialogue 4.0, as well as leadership competences that are particularly important due to two transformations: digital and energy - said prof. Dobrowolska.

As part of the training for leadership competences of the future, there was a lot of discussion about the consequences of technological progress for humans and futuristic visions regarding the projected future of the labour market.
