Prime Minister's Awards for dr Eng. Tomasz Bradecki, prof. of Silesian University of Technology
Dr hab. Eng. Tomasz Bradecki, prof. SUT received the Prime Minister’s award. The distinction was awarded for highly rated scientific achievements that were the basis for awarding the degree of habilitated doctor.
In his work, the scientist proposed an original system for assessing the spatial values of multi-family housing complexes. The innovation of the presented concept lies in emphasizing the role of modelling in urban design.
– The proposed assessment method takes into account numerous spatial conditions that are interconnected, which was taken into account in the overall 3D model and the assessment model of the analysed estate – explains dr hab. Eng. Tomasz Bradecki, prof. SUT.
The study uses experience gained during experiments with BIM (Building Information Modelling) models. The scientist also points to the usefulness of using information available in Municipal Spatial Information Systems and in the geographic information system - GIS. The researcher also proposes the experimental use of augmented reality models as a tool for presenting spatial solutions of local plan provisions.
An example of the use of the method may be the author's redefinition of the model of a neighbourhood unit, which was proposed over 100 years earlier by Calrence Perry and may still be valid, but only if it takes into account contemporary conditions. This is the model the author proposed in his work (drawing).

– Urban design using models, indicators and parameters can improve the quality of the living environment. The use of new digital technologies may also be useful in assessing the effects of design decisions. Creating models of variants described by indicators and parameters enables their analysis. New parametric technologies from which my proposed method draws are based on the relationship of indicators and parameters, which are visualized in 3D form and a parameter evaluation table. These technologies can be used in spatial planning, and they also allow for optimization of results - added dr hab. Eng. Tomasz Bradecki, prof. SUT. Thanks to the assessment system, it is easier and more effective to plan non-obvious biologically active surfaces (green roofs, wall terraces).
The evaluation system proposed by dr hab. Eng. Tomasz Bradecki prof. SUT can be used by designers, architects, urban planners, as well as developers and city authorities.
– It may be useful in assessing land development plans, analysing existing housing complexes and identifying areas for remedial actions – said the scientist.
Developed by dr hab.Eng. Tomasz Bradecki prof. SUT evaluation system was appreciated by the Prime Minister, who awarded the scientist an award.
– It is important to me for two reasons. The first is the fact that the Prime Minister's Award is not often awarded in the discipline of architecture and urban planning. The second is the fact that the proposed solution is based on my experience and scientific experiments, and also draws on experience from design practice, which makes me very happy as a professionally active architect and urban planner - concluded dr hab. Eng. Tomasz Bradecki, prof. SUT.
