We know the winners of the Three Minute Thesis® 2023 competition

On Friday, November 17th, 2023, the final of the sixth Silesian edition of the Three Minute Thesis competition took place at CKS Mrowisko. The competition was attended by PhD students representing various universities in the Silesian Voivodeship and thus various scientific disciplines, from medicine to psychology, law, materials engineering and environmental protection.

Three Minute Thesis® is a competition held under license from the University of Queensland in Australia. It is attended by PhD students from all over the world who try their hand at scientific communication and self-presentation. The Silesian edition of the competition has been organized for 6 years by the Science Popularization Centre and the University Self-Government Council of the Doctoral Students of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice.

- This year, 17 candidates entered the competition. 10 doctoral students advanced to the finals of the competition. After comments received from the jurors during the elimination round, they had to present their doctoral thesis in 3 minutes once again, in an even more interesting way - said dr hab. Aleksandra Ziembińska-Buczyńska, prof. SUT– director of the Science Popularization Centre of the Silesian University of Technology.

- I am taking part in this event once again and each time with great interest. I see great passion among PhD students, but they have a difficult task ahead of them to talk about the most important issues they deal with - research, results and ideas - in three minutes. In addition, all this should be said in a very attractive way, so as to interest both the jurors and the audience - added prof. dr Eng. Marek Pawełczyk – vice-rector for science and development of the Silesian University of Technology.

The participants themselves admitted after their speeches that the competition was an experience for them that would certainly bear fruit in their future scientific and professional work.

- Thanks to this, I improved my self-confidence. Both myself and the other participants certainly made fewer mistakes because we took the jury's advice from the elimination stage to heart. I think that in the future, when we will have to present the results of our research in order to attract contractors or collaborators for our projects and research, said Bartosz Jaroszewski from the Doctoral School of the Medical University of Silesia - winner of the audience award.
