Professor Wilhelm Gorecki has passed away

We regret to inform you that an outstanding Scientist, a distinguished Academic Teacher, a man of great knowledge, vast experience, an organizer of science, an educator of many generations of students and PhD students, an employee of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology since 1998, has passed away.

In the years 2000 - 2003 prof. Gorecki was the head of the Metal Plastic Processing Department at the Department of Metal and Polymer Materials Processing. The scientific and organizational activities of Professor Wilhelm Gorecki were very highly appreciated.

He participated in many important committees, including the EUROFER Standardization Commission in Brussels, the European Union APPEAL agency for the production, use and disposal of sheet metal in Brussels, the CIELFFA European Union agency for the production and use of rolled products in Düsseldorf and the UNIDO agency in Vienna.

Professor Wilhelm Gorecki was the author of over 100 scientific publications and the leader of numerous research works, resulting in many industrial implementations, as well as patents and invention projects. The professor was also the author of several academic textbooks, including the first Polish-English-German-Russian dictionary on metal forming, published in 2000.

Professor Wilhelm Gorecki was awarded numerous distinctions, including the Medal of the National Education Commission, the Gold Cross of Merit, the Silver Badge "For Merit in the Development of the Katowice Voivodeship", the Gold Badge of Honor of SITPH, and the Badge "Distinguished Employee of the Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy". He has been awarded many times for his scientific, teaching and organizational achievements. He was also honoured with the Medal of the 60th Anniversary of the Silesian University of Technology.

A passionate man, especially in recent years he was interested in the history of metallurgy in the region where he worked and lived. He published a book titled "The development of industry in Upper Silesia in the 18th and 19th centuries on the example of the Florian Steelworks."

He will remain in our memory forever. We express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

The Holy Mass will be celebrated on November 9, 2023, at 7:30 in the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul in Gliwice. Funeral ceremonies will take place on the same day at 11:00 in the chapel at the Central Cemetery in Gliwice.
