The recreational camp for first-year students is behind us
Joint conversations, sports games and tourism - this is how the four-day tourist and recreational camp for first-year students of our University was organized by the Sports Centre at the Training and Recreation Centre of the Silesian University of Technology "CIS" in Szczyrk.
- The participants had, among other things, the opportunity to see the facilities of the Central Olympic Preparation Centre - says dr Krzysztof Szydło, deputy director for teaching at the Silesian University of Technology Sports Centre. - Moreover, we organized a football and volleyball tournament for them. We also had mountain trips, for example to the Karkoszczonka Pass. Of course, we also visited Szczyrk itself.
The students were supervised by prof. Krzysztof Czapla, dr Krzysztof Szydło and Jolanta Krzyszkowska from the SUT Sports Centre. In addition to recreational activities, there were also meetings during which young people could ask questions about studies at the Silesian University of Technology.
- I am very pleasantly surprised by the involvement of young people - sums up prof. Krzysztof Czapla, director of the SUT Sports Centre. - We had a group focused on learning and getting to know the University. We talked a lot about what they would like to learn. In addition, the participants asked a lot about the study schedule, what the physics and mathematics exams look like, about our sports sections and life on the campus of the Silesian University of Technology. We tried to show young people how to best fit in the student environment. It is very important that students noticed that the University authorities respond to their needs - for example, from this academic year, physics will only be included in the second semester of the first year of studies. I think that after this camp, which gave them a lot of joy due to the very good organization that filled their all-day schedule of classes and the warm attitude towards the young people from the practical and theoretical classes, their faith in choosing the Silesian University of Technology is certainly more firmly established. The smiles on their faces and thanks after the end of the camp showed great satisfaction that they could participate in the integration during sports and recreational activities and direct meetings with experienced teaching staff of the Sports Centre.
"Adapciak - Gryfno Rajza", an adaptation camp for first-year students, organized by the Student Government of the Silesian University of Technology is already behind us. The camp took place on the campus of our University and in the Banderoza centre in Głuchołazy.
- Every year, "Gryfno Rajza" is set in a different universe, according to which we choose the names of the teams, the plan of the schedule and the uniforms of the staff - says Katarzyna Ptaszyńska, president of the Student Government. - Previously it was a Harry Potter theme, this year Far Far Away was chosen due to its popularity and the fact that the film "Shrek" recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. On the first day of the camp, it was officially opened by prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk, the rector of the Silesian University of Technology, prof. Wojciech Szkliniarz, vice-rector for student affairs and education of the SUT, and director Grażyna Maszniew.
- That day we had a city game during which participants visited the campus and had to recreate previously prepared and displayed photos at thirteen strategic points. The participants also visited the most important places of our University - recalls Katarzyna Ptaszyńska. - In Głuchołazy, we have planned daily team attractions and evening integration events. The event was attended by 165 participants who are starting their studies at the Silesian University of Technology this academic year. They were accompanied by 18 supervisors, experienced students and local government officials.
