Recruitment success at the Silesian University of Technology

Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Applied Linguistics, Transport, Automation and Robotics, and Architecture - these are the most popular fields of study at the Silesian University of Technology this year. This year's recruitment turned out to be a great success. Despite the significant increase in the point threshold and in the requirements for qualifying for majors at the only research university in the Silesian province, over 10,000 candidates registered in the first term of this year's recruitment. This is an increase of over 22% compared to the same period last year.

Candidates could choose from over 50 fields of study adapted to market requirements. The university also prepared many novelties that encouraged young people to choose the Silesian University of Technology. - We have made the effort to shape the curricula of individual fields of study in such a way that the student becomes the subject, not the object of education, and the teacher becomes a guide in this process, developing independence, not suppressing curiosity, allowing to see the need for lifelong learning - says Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Education prof. Wojciech Szkliniarz.

One of the innovative solutions modernizing the education system is the reduction of the number of hours in the first semester of first-cycle studies.  - It's about helping young people to adapt better. In addition, we are introducing the function of a first-year tutor who will help in the adaptation process. We also offer free compensatory classes in mathematics and physics. In the first semester, there will also be special workshops called Techniques and tools of communication, during which students will learn how to discuss, ask questions or integrate with the group - adds the Vice-Rector.

However, the most important changes introduced by the Silesian University of Technology concern the way of teaching. - It is primarily about making the program of the first year of studies more flexible, enabling a possible change of major without the need to compensate for program differences. We also offer modular education, the student will choose the subjects that interest him, in this way he will be able to compose his own, individual education program - says prof. Szkliniarz.

The university also offers practical classes conducted in the form of seminars, laboratory classes and modern forms of education such as PBL, i.e., Project Based Learning (PBL) - teaching through the implementation of projects related to solving real problems or Design Thinking, which helps in creating innovative solutions. Silesian University of Technology, as one of the 10 best research universities in the country, creates but also carefully observes the processes taking place in the socio-economic environment, designing education tailored to the needs and expectations of both students and employers who actively support the education system.

Because the work environment is changing in an extremely dynamic way and we are not able to fully predict what professions will be needed in a few or a dozen or so years, the role of the University is to teach young people creativity, teamwork skills, often in interdisciplinary, international teams. The answer to the expectations of interdisciplinary education is a course unique in Poland, called Inżynieria Ogólna (General Engineering) run for two years at the Silesian University of Technology, which includes an interdisciplinary study program related to various engineering disciplines.

- From the academic year 2023/2024, the field of General Engineering will play a special role in the process of making education in the first-cycle studies more flexible, because it can be applied for by candidates who are still not sure what field they want to study and need more time and more information to consider all available options - emphasizes Vice-Rector Wojciech Szkliniarz.

The initial assessments of the candidates themselves show that the selection of the Silesian University of Technology as the future university is also helped by a transparent recruitment website, correlated with the IRK system, containing the most necessary information useful in the recruitment process written in plain language - We have completely renovated the recruitment portal, there is all the necessary information there. Candidates have there clearly presented study plans; they can see what classes they will have and in what time frame. There is also information on scholarships or places in student dormitories - adds the Vice-Rector.

The Silesian University of Technology, ranked highest among Silesian universities in the Perspektywy ranking, is one of ten research universities educating engineers of the future, specializing in innovative technologies. The University's research activities and related education are carried out under six Priority Research Areas (POB):

  • Computational oncology and personalized medicine
  • Artificial intelligence and data processing
  • The materials of the future
  • Smart cities and mobility of the future
  • Process automation and industry 4.0
  • Climate and environmental protection, modern energy

The university is also dynamically working on the creation of the European University, being part of a consortium of nine European universities - EURECA-PRO, which gives students, scientists and employees great opportunities to develop their skills in an international environment.

On July 21, 2023, the next round of recruitment for the fields of study with vacancies has started. It is worth hurrying up, because there is no shortage of applicants, even though the university has been increasing the number of places in individual faculties due to the great interest.
