Awards of the Polish Academy of Sciences for scientists of the Silesian University of Technology
Prof. Wojciech Adamczyk from the Faculty of Environmental and Power Engineering and Dr Eng. Katarzyna Turoń from the Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering received the award of the Division IV of Technical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
These awards are given to young scientists of up to 40 years old, for outstanding published creative scientific work in the field of technical sciences. In 2022, the prize of the Division IV of Technical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences was awarded to six scientists, including two from the Silesian University of Technology: Prof. Wojciech Adamczyk and Dr Eng. Katarzyna Turoń.
Prof. Wojciech Adamczyk from the Faculty of Environmental and Power Engineering received the award for his monograph on modelling and validation of multiphase flow phenomena and a series of scientific publications on computer simulations of thermal-flow processes and their experimental validation.
– The subject of the publication concerns simple (direct) and inverse tasks in many fields of technology and science, e.g. energy, biomedical engineering, materials. These works are a significant contribution to the development of mathematical models dedicated to modelling dense multiphase flows used in the power industry and medicine - said Prof. Wojciech Adamczyk.
- This award allowed me to believe in the sense of the scientist's work and motivate me to further scientific work - adds the professor.
The second winner of the award of the Division IV of Technical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences is Dr Eng. Katarzyna Turoń from the Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering. The distinction was awarded for a doctoral dissertation, defended with honours, devoted to the subject of selecting the right type of car-sharing systems for the needs of urban areas. The work supports the solution to the problem of inadequately implemented or functioning car-sharing services in Poland and contributes to the development of modern mobility and transformation taking place on the individual automotive market.
– The award received is an honour for my scientific activities to date. It is a great honour for me that I was able to be among the winners selected from among applications from all over Poland. Importantly, it was the only awarded work devoted to the subject of transport. I am very pleased that it has been appreciated, especially since we are currently dealing with a revolution in transport, which requires advanced research on modern forms of transport - emphasized the laureate.
Prof. Wojciech Adamczyk works at the Faculty of Environmental and Energy Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology. He conducts scientific activity in three areas:
- the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning methods to maintain critical infrastructure
- research on the possibility of using ammonia as an energy carrier in the energy transformation
- development of a diagnostic platform supporting cardiac procedures in the field of transcatheter implantation of an artificial aortic valve
Dr Eng. Katarzyna Turoń holds a PhD in technical sciences in the scientific discipline of Civil Engineering and Transport. She is employed as an assistant professor at the Department of Road Transport, Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology. In her research, she deals with the subject of sustainable transport, with particular emphasis on modern forms of mobility (car-sharing, scooter-sharing) and electromobility. She is the author of over 150 scientific articles, participant of numerous foreign internships and scientific and industry conferences. She has been awarded numerous awards and scholarships for her activities.
