New Mobility Congress 2026 is underway. An important role of the Silesian University of Technology
On September 23rd, 2026, the next edition of the New Mobility Congress began in Katowice. It is the largest event in Central and Eastern Europe dedicated entirely to all aspects of sustainable transformation and mobility. The program includes debates and panels devoted to the most important economic, social and transport challenges in Poland and the region.
Silesia is an ideal place to talk about modern mobility. During the opening of the congress, both members of the Polish Association of New Mobility and representatives of the Government emphasized that it is here that the greatest transformation changes are taking place, that modern plants of the automotive industry operate here and here there is a huge scientific potential. The Minister of Science and Higher Education has no doubt that it is science that one should put hope in when it comes to building the potential of modern mobility in the country. This was also discussed during the Rectors’ Round Table, in which Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Marek Pawełczyk, the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology took part.
- It is perfectly clear during this Congress that new mobility is not just electric cars, but a number of technologies that make such a car possible to drive and function. These are not only issues of mechanics, but modern technologies in the field of digitization, reasoning algorithms, very far-reaching artificial intelligence, communication processes, cybersecurity, and transport logistics – said the Rector.
Silesian University of Technology has scientific and didactic potential in all these aspects. The University offers holistic education - assured the Rector. - We have the Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering, where 400 people are admitted for the first year of study. We also have a rich air base with nine aircraft, with all the equipment for the training of pilots, mechanics, navigators, air traffic controllers. We also have a base educating specialists for the needs of the railway industry – he said.
Thus, the role of the University in building new mobility, mobility of the future is significant. The Rector sees potential, among others, in plans related to the construction of an electric car factory in the Silesian Voivodeship.
- For the Silesian University of Technology, it would be a great opportunity. If we assume that a fully Polish car will be produced in Silesia, and the factory will be not only an assembly plant but a large development centre, producing components needed for this car, then this is a huge development potential for our scientists – he added.

In particular, the organizers encourage to participate in the Deep Tech Transformation Forum 2026, which accompanies this year’s New Mobility Congress in Katowice. The forum focuses on the role of science, research, and universities in the transformation process.
The event will last until Friday, September 25th. As part of the Student Pass, students can participate in all three days of the event free of charge.
