"The Katowice Game" appreciated in the international competition
“The Katowice Game” won a bronze award in the “Design for Impact” category in the international Design Educates competition. The competition gathers a renowned jury, which includes personalities from the world of architecture and design. The creators of the game are students and members of the Urbanmodel science club, and the whole project is carried out under the supervision of the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture Dr Hab. Eng. Arch. Tomasz Bradecki, Prof. SUT.
"KATOpoli" is an educational board and card game dedicated to Katowice, the capital of the Silesian Voivodeship. The cardboard game project combines urban education, city promotion and social engagement, helping players to understand the processes that shape modern cities.
- I am proud of our students who every year develop our common concept of board games dedicated to popularizing the city. “The Katowice Game”, implemented in consultation with the city of Katowice, is a successful development of the board game “Metropolis GZM”. Such games have a chance to be a good tool in didactics and more. It is thanks to students that we develop scientific research about cities in such a creative and unobvious way – says Dean of the Faculty of Architecture Dr Hab. Eng. Arch. Tomasz Bradecki, Prof. SUT.
The game, based on the urban structure of Katowice, encourages participants to take on the role of urban planners. The color-coded district cards represent different areas of the city, while the opportunities and risks cards reflect urban challenges and development strategies related to housing, environment, economy and society. Players compete to create the most successful district, making decisions that affect the development of the city and quality of life. The game addresses issues such as greening cities, heat islands, sustainability and social cohesion.
The game includes a board, a city quiz, 3D-printed pawns depicting characteristic objects, and a specially designed modular cube made in 3D printing technology In addition to generating random values, the cube serves as a platform for spatial structures, enabling the combination of pawns and multiple cubes into three-dimensional structures that visualize urban development.
By transforming complex urban concepts into an interactive experience, KATOpoli builds urban awareness, strengthens local identity and encourages dialog on the future of cities through play.
The award ceremony will take place during the gala in Warsaw on October 16th, 2026.
Playing cards are on sale at the Silesian University of Technology Store: https://esklep.polsl.pl/produkt/gra-w-katowice/.
Gra, oparta na strukturze urbanistycznej Katowic, zachęca uczestników do wcielenia się w rolę urbanistów. Oznaczone kolorami karty dzielnic reprezentują różne obszary miasta, natomiast karty szans i zagrożeń odzwierciedlają wyzwania urbanistyczne oraz strategie rozwoju związane z mieszkalnictwem, środowiskiem, gospodarką i społeczeństwem. Gracze rywalizują o stworzenie najbardziej udanej dzielnicy, podejmując decyzje wpływające na rozwój miasta i jakość życia. Rozgrywka porusza takie kwestie, jak zazielenianie miast, wyspy ciepła, zrównoważony rozwój i spójność społeczna.
Gra zawiera planszę, quiz miejski, pionki wydrukowane w 3D przedstawiające charakterystyczne obiekty oraz specjalnie zaprojektowaną modułową kostkę wykonaną w technologii druku 3D. Oprócz generowania losowych wartości kostka służy jako platforma do konstrukcji przestrzennych, umożliwiająca łączenie pionków i wielu kostek w trójwymiarowe struktury wizualizujące rozwój miejski.
Przekształcając złożone koncepcje urbanistyczne w interaktywne doświadczenie, KATOpoli buduje świadomość urbanistyczną, wzmacnia lokalną tożsamość oraz poprzez zabawę zachęca do dialogu na temat przyszłości miast.
Wręczenie nagród odbędzie się podczas gali w Warszawie 16 października 2026 roku.
