An expert from the Silesian University of Technology on chemical and cosmetic myths

Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Nikodem Kuźnik, Rector's Plenipotentiary for the Student Scientific Movement and an employee of the Faculty of Chemistry of the Silesian University of Technology, took part in a videocast organized by BASF Polska. BASF is one of the largest global chemical corporations, operating in numerous markets and across various industrial sectors, offering a broad product portfolio, including chemicals, materials, and solutions for many industries. In 2023, the Silesian University of Technology signed an agreement with BASF Polska regarding scientific and educational cooperation.

The conversation, led by specialists from the chemical and cosmetics industries, focused on debunking common myths surrounding everyday chemical and cosmetic products. The importance of chemistry as the foundation of modern civilization and its ubiquity in everyday life – from natural processes to industrial applications – were emphasized. The role of regulation and security, as well as the problem of disinformation and simplified media messages, were also important themes.

Prof. Nikodem Kuźnik pointed out that chemistry is present in nature and everyday experiences, including in the scents and colours of flowers, and therefore should not evoke only negative associations. He emphasized that we use its achievements every day, especially in medicine, where it enables treatment and improvement of the quality of life. He also stressed the importance of reliable scientific information and the need for dialogue that allows us to distinguish research-based knowledge from emotional and often misleading messages.
