Meeting of the Social Council of the Silesian University of Technology

The most important directions of the University’s development in the context of efforts to participate in the next edition of the “Excellence Initiative – Research University” program is the main topic of the meeting of the Social Council of the Silesian University of Technology. During the meeting, the activities of the University authorities so far, key investments and achievements of the academic community have also been discussed.

The Social Council of the Silesian University of Technology is a body consisting of outstanding representatives of the world of business, industry, self-government, science, as well as associations and social organizations. Interestingly, many of them are graduates of our university. The task of the Council is primarily to express opinions on the directions of development of the Silesian University of Technology and to support the activities of the University.

– We want to present what activities the University is undertaking, but at the same time to make it a starting point for a wider discussion on its further functioning and directions of development – said Professor Marek Pawełczyk, the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, who at the beginning of the meeting presented to the Council the most important activities and achievements in   recent months.

A special place on the agenda was taken by the discussion on strategic plans for the coming years, including preparations to apply for participation in the next edition of the “Initiative of Excellence  Research University” program. As emphasized, the presence of the Silesian University of Technology in the elite group of ten research universities in Poland is a great distinction.

This also imposes additional obligations, because the Silesian University of Technology isthe only research university in the region – emphasized Wiktor Pawlik, President of the Regional Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Gliwice, who serves as the President of the Social Council.  Our role is, among others, to indicate directions of development, formulate conclusions and recommendations, and to support the cooperation of science with industry and local government. It is this, as   I like to call the “golden triangle” of science, self-government, and business, which is of particular importance, and I am very glad that the Silesian University of Technology is consistently developing in this direction – added the President of the Council.

– The opinions of Council members, exceptional people, outstanding people, representing both the social and industrial environment are invaluable to us. We want to listen to their perspective on how they perceive the University, what opportunities they see and how the further integration of these environments should take place. These are people with vast experience, which we would like to use also in the context of developing the University’s development strategy for the coming years – emphasized the Rector.

The meeting confirmed that the Silesian University of Technology focuses on dialog and cooperation with the socio-economic environments, treating them as an important element of its activity. The Social Council of the Silesian University of Technology has also awarded two awards – for the student science club and the best employee, which will be presented during the solemn inauguration of the Academic Year 2026/2027. Three candidates were nominated in each category.
