Workshops on the Oxford debate – from the basics to the advanced level
The Student Activity Centre (CAS) invites to workshops on the Oxford debate, addressed to people who want to start their adventure with debating from scratch or deepen their knowledge and skills. The program of classes will be adjusted to the number of participants and their level of advancement. Each participant determines the level they want to participate in when registering.
The workshop will be held on the 5th of May 2026 from 09.00 to 14:00 at the Student Creativity Centre, 3, Akademicka Street in Gliwice.
The link to the registration is available HERE.
Classes will be conducted in two groups depending on the level of advancement.
The basic level (1 group – about 20 people) will include theoretical and practical training aimed at familiarizing the participant with the idea of the Oxford debate, its structure, principles, and method of assessment.
Participants will learn about:
- the role of the individual speakers,
- principles of building an argument line,
- the basis for analysis of theses and problems,
- elements of public speeches,
- techniques for dealing with stress during speech.
Intermediate level (groups max. 8 or 16 people) is an option for extended theoretical and practical training for those who already have basic knowledge of the Oxford debate.
The program includes:
- preparation of effective and in-depth arguments,
- weighing the arguments during the debate,
- analysis of various types of theses (e.g. policy, obligation, evaluation, comparative, retrospective or with an info slide),
- discussion of the concept of the debate model and the principles of its application,
- introducing the sports dimension of debates – rating cards, scoring rules and expert assessments,
- work on body language, expressiveness, coping with stress and the basics of speech.
The workshop is an excellent opportunity to develop communication, analytical and rhetorical skills in a practical and engaging form.
