Opening of a new hangar at Katowice Airport with the participation of the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology

On April 16th, 2026, a new aircraft maintenance hangar – Hangar H4 – was officially opened at Katowice Airport. The event, which opens the next chapter in the development of the airport in Pyrzowice, was attended by the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, prof Marek Pawełczyk. The investment is not only a step toward modern infrastructure, but also a proof of excellent synergy between science and business and a great opportunity for graduates of our University.

The whole event was led by MSc. Eng. Artur Tomasik, President of the Upper Silesian Aviation Group (GTL), and at the same time Deputy Chairman of the Aviation Council at the Silesian University of Technology. The ceremonial opening was attended by key representatives of local and state authorities, including the Mayor of Katowice, Dr Eng. Marcin Krupa, Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship Wojciech Saługa and Governor of Silesia Marek Wójcik.

During the speeches, the speakers repeatedly emphasized the key importance of the Silesian University of Technology for the development of the aviation industry in the region. The university is the main source of highly qualified specialists – aircraft mechanics, traffic controllers and pilots who supply the staff of the Katowice airport.

As the President of GTL Artur Tomasik pointed out, the construction of the MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) centre in Pyrzowice allowed to create a lasting synergy between the airport and the Silesian University of Technology, which actively educates specialists for the needs of companies dealing with servicing machines.

The new facility marked as H4 is the largest hangar in the history of the airport in Pyrzowice. Its area is over 11 thousand square meters, and the cost of the investment realized by GTL amounted to PLN 55 million net. The twin service bays will enable the parallel operation of two C-code aircraft (e.g. Airbus A320 and Boeing 737). The main tenant of the facility is Wizz Air.

From the perspective of education and the labour market, the opening of the hangar is excellent news. The new infrastructure will ultimately generate 150 to even 200 new jobs for engineers, mechanics, and qualified technical staff, which is directly reflected in the didactic offer of the Silesian University of Technology.
