Another group of representatives of uniformed services completed a specialist course at the Faculty of Chemistry

On the 22nd of January, in the Hall of the Faculty of Chemistry, a certificate of completion of the specialized course “Recognition and detection of improvised materials from the CBRNE hazard group and sampling to be used in legal procedures” was held. The event was attended by the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Marek Pawełczyk.

Specialized training took place at the Faculty of Chemistry and lasted five days.

- This is another course conducted by our specialists from the High-Energy and Electroactive Materials Team of the Department of Physical Chemistry and Technology of Polymers of the Faculty of Chemistry - says Dr Hab. Eng. Tomasz Jarosz. – This time it was attended by police representatives from both combat, mining, and pyrotechnic groups, as well as investigative and investigative groups. The subject matter was very diverse. We had lectures on radiology, principles of sampling and handling of samples, detection of explosives and other hazardous materials, and laboratory classes, as well as classes on the principle of practical protection of samples in simulated combat conditions. The officers praised the training very much; there were a lot of questions and willingness to cooperate further.

The certificates were presented to the participants by Rector Marek Pawełczyk and Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Wojciech Simka.

- This is an extremely necessary training. Speaking with the participants, we learned that they count on the support of experienced people with competences who are able to share their knowledge, thanks to which they can guarantee the safety and effectiveness of uniformed services – says Rector Marek Pawełczyk. – It was not the first time that the course was organised, and this confirms that the Silesian University of Technology has a well-established reputation. During the talks, I also mentioned the establishment of our Centre for Defence and Dual-use Technologies and the activities it is undertaking, and this has aroused great interest. I hope that there will be more similar initiatives because they are a perfect example that we can work together and be very helpful.

Let us remind you that the Faculty of Chemistry conducts postgraduate studies in the field of explosives technologies.

- Cooperation with uniformed services builds our experience, allows us to develop and expand our knowledge - explains Dean Wojciech Simka. - During the training, our scientists show how to prevent threats and how to detect them. A variety of chemical methods are used, and our role is to show how to use them safely and effectively.
