Oxford debate workshops for engineers of the future
How to effectively and logically argue one’s reasons and above all increase self-confidence during public speeches – students of the Silesian University of Technology took part in workshops on conducting Oxford debates organized by the Student Activity Centre.
“From argument to victory – comprehensive workshops on Oxford debates” is the title of an intensive, five-hour training, which took place on Saturday, December 6th at the Student Creativity Centre. The classes were conducted by the” Nowy Głos Foundation,” specializing in debate training. The workshops combined theoretical introduction with practice, students practiced various techniques, and at the end of the classes they conducted an Oxford debate on industrialization of industry in an academic context.
– Students learned not only the principles of conducting the Oxford debate, but above all the conscious and logical formulation of arguments and effective response to counter arguments. They worked on clear expression of thoughts and self-confidence in situations requiring quick decisions. These competences are key today both in the academic environment and in the future professional work of students, as they teach critical thinking, negotiation, and responsible presentation of one’s own point of view. - I am convinced that such experiences really prepare our students for the role of engineers of the future – says Dr Eng. Agata Guzik-Kopyto, director of the Student Activity Centre.
Workshops on conducting Oxford debates were some of many classes and events for students of the Silesian University of Technology organized by CAS (Student Activity Centre). Classes are free of charge and always take place in a unique atmosphere – this time the participants were visited... by Santa.
