Gliwice Airport control tower in the competition works of architecture students
On November 24th, a post-competition gala took place at the airport in Gliwice with an exhibition, announcement of results and award ceremony as part of the competition for students of the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology. The topic of the competition was the concept of the control tower at the Gliwice Airport.
The organizers of the competition are the Upper Silesian Market Entrepreneurship Accelerator (GAPR) and the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology ( Rar5 Department). The prize pool funded by GAPR is PLN 15 thousand. The coordinators of the competition were Dr Hab. Krzysztof Wodarski Prof SUT, Dr Hab. Eng. Arch. Klaudiusz Fross, Prof. SUT. The Gala ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Gliwice Katarzyna Kuczyńska-Budka and the Deputy Minister of Science Prof. Marek Gzik.
The competition was attended by 34 students in 16 teams. One team, according to the rules, submitted 2 works. Once again, architecture students showed professionalism, creativity, and talent by creating 17 different proposals for the flight control tower, trying to respond to difficult requirements. The tower was to be a recognizable landmark, stand out in form and be a modern architectural dominant. The building was to serve as a showcase of the airport and the city, highlighting their aspirations for development and importance on the map of the region. The architectural design should be modern, elegant, and timeless. The facility should refer to the identity of Gliwice as a city of innovation, boasting of the Silesian University of Technology, the IT sector, automation, aviation, and new technologies.
The winners are: Eng. Arch. Paulina Olschowka, Eng. Arch. Julia Będkowska and Eng. Arch. Daniel Bobrowski.
In order to be able to create the shape of the form of the tower, students had to meet the detailed technical and functional requirements, respond to the precise criteria set for the function in question. The very transition to the final stage was a big challenge and distinction. The works were evaluated by a jury consisting of 7 specialists: representatives of the City of Gliwice (Urban Planning Office), GAPR and the Silesian University of Technology, including 3 pilots. All works were presented at the post-competition exhibition. Each participant received a diploma of participation from the hands of the Mayor of the City.
