GZM among the leading centres of artificial intelligence development in Poland

The Upper Silesian-Zagłębie Metropolis (GZM) is on the list of leading AI development units in Poland. Companies, research centres, and universities, including the Silesian University of Technology, will participate in the implementation of this task.

The Ministry of Digital Affairs announced an updated version of the “Policy for the Development of Artificial Intelligence in Poland until 2030”. The document expands the list of leading entities developing AI in Poland. This group will include the Upper Silesian-Zagłębie Metropolis (GZM) from January 2027.

The participation of universities, companies, and research centres in the implementation of the policy of artificial intelligence development means, for example, improving the quality of the academic offer and many attractive jobs.

The fact of joining the group of leading centres confirms that Upper Silesia and Zagłębie are becoming one of the most important points on the map of Polish digital transformation – a place where science, business and local government jointly create the technologies of the future.

– I would like to thank the Ministry and Minister Dariusz Standerski personally for their openness to our arguments and for their discussions – emphasizes the Chairman of the GZM Board Kazimierz Karolczak. – I would also like to thank all those who took part in the public consultations of the document – cities, universities, technology companies, and non-governmental organizations from the GZM area. The decision of the Ministry is not only a distinction for us, but also a commitment. The status of a leading centre opens up completely new possibilities for the metropolis: from ambitious research projects and larger investments to strengthening international cooperation. The most important thing, however, is that the development of artificial intelligence can have a real impact on the quality of life of residents – adds Karolczak.

Recognition of GZM as one of the leading centres in the development of artificial intelligence in Poland brings a number of benefits. The Ministry of Digital Affairs assured that it will support the Metropolis on many levels – from access to advanced computing infrastructure, including supercomputers of the AI  Factory and Gigafactory and resources of the PLGrid consortium, to substantive and expert assistance in projects inscribed on the Polish Map of Research Infrastructure or implemented within the Polish National  Competence Centre HPC. The Metropolis will also be able to count on support in educational activities related to digital competences and adaptation to new technologies.
