Dr. Eng. Arch. Grzegorz Rendchen has passed away

We regret to inform that on the 22nd of September 2025, at the age of 71, Dr Eng. Arch. Grzegorz Rendchen - a valued employee of the Faculty of Architecture, passed away.

He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology and in 1980 he started to work in the Preliminary Design Team and then in the Department of Urban and Spatial Planning.

In 1990, he was elected Vice President of Bytom in the first term of the municipal government. During this pioneering time, he tried to present new visions and introduce original solutions covering architectural concepts, property management, civil engineering, and spatial planning. He took measures aimed at improving the environment in the Bytomka river valley, his idea was to adapt the workers’ settlement Zgorzelec to the “village of artists.”

In 1993, he returned to the university and together with his colleagues from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, he began introducing education in a new specialty of civil engineering and architecture. At the Silesian University of Technology Engineering Training Centre in Rybnik, students underwent an interdisciplinary design course covering a comprehensive approach to architectural issues, design of structures and conducting civil engineering processes. In 2016 he received the statuette of Rybnik Academic Lecturer.

Dr Eng Grzegorz Rendchen, architect, will be remembered as an excellent lecturer who had good rapport with students, who provided them with knowledge and practical skills, supported them with his own experience. Colleagues, employees, and students appreciated his broad knowledge, kindness, smile, and the sense of humour.

The Senate of the Silesian University of Technology awarded him with the Badge “Distinguished for the Silesian University of Technology,” the President of the Republic of Poland awarded him the Silver Cross of Merit and the Gold Medal for Long-term Service.

The funeral ceremony will be held on 27.09.2025 at 10:00 in the chapel of the funeral home in Piekary Śląskie-Szarlej, and then the funeral at the parish cemetery in Piekary Śląskie-Szarlej.
