Silesian University of Technology begins an important cooperation with KOMAG and DUMAT ENERGY

Silesian University of Technology, ITG KOMAG and DUMAT ENERGY sp. z o.o. strengthen cooperation. On July the 10th, a trilateral agreement was officially signed, on the basis of which the parties declared their willingness to conduct joint scientific research and training of personnel for the needs of a new investment in the region – a semiconductor factory.

On July the 10th, 2025, the Silesian University of Technology signed a trilateral cooperation agreement with the KOMAG Institute of Mining Technology and DUMAT ENERGY sp. z o.o. The aim of the agreement is to establish lasting and effective cooperation in the field of scientific research, technological development, education and training and development of engineering staff.

“We have been cooperating with KOMAG for a long time and DUMAT ENERGY is becoming a new but important partner for us. The company is conducting advanced talks with Taiwan at the Ministry level to establish the first semiconductor factory in Silesia. The company needs specialist knowledge for this, which is why, as the Silesian University of Technology, we want to offer a substantive contribution and experience related to this industry – said Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Marek Pawełczyk, Rector of the Silesian University of Technology.

The university has also for some time been involved in building relations with the Taiwanese side, specifically with the local universities. In recent days, the delegation of the Silesian University of Technology participated in a visit organized by the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology to Taiwan. The visit was devoted to cooperation in the field of development of new technologies.

- Due to the current geopolitical situation, Taiwan is looking for partners in various parts of the world, especially in the European Union. Poland is perceived as a rapidly developing country, and therefore it is here that the factory is to be located. For us, this is a good sign, especially that the areas of interest of the Taiwanese side – electronics and artificial intelligence, are also among our priority areas of development – added the Rector.

The representative of DUMAT ENERGY sp. z o.o. did not hide that cooperation with the Silesian University of Technology related to the new investment is crucial for the future of this company. DUMAT ENERGY is a part of the DUMAT Capital Group, which has been on the market for over 30 years.

- So far, we have been supporting the mining-mining and partly steel sector, but due to the ongoing transformation process, we need to think about changing the profile of our operations and expanding the segments in which we operate. We have been cooperating with Taiwan for a long time, and we intend to start a new stage in the company’s operations with them – said Grzegorz Boncal, a proxy for DUMAT ENERGY sp. z o.o.

The company promises a fundamental change, a transition to a higher technological level, and for that it needs support from scientists.

-The profile of our business will now focus on the production of semiconductors, new power modules, everything without which the modern world cannot function. We are working on a business plan. We are after the visit to Taiwan; the Taiwanese party also visited us. We are on the right path to development – added Grzegorz Boncal.

The company’s cooperation with the Silesian University of Technology and the KOMAG Institute will include, among others, implementation of joint research and development projects, implementation of innovative solutions, organization of student internships and work placements, support for diploma and doctoral theses, as well as activities related to the promotion and commercialization of research results.

The parties also declared cooperation in the field of joint applications for project financing, including from national and EU funds, as well as organizing training, lectures and educational events for students, PhD students and researchers.

-The topic of joint actions is close to us; we look forward to fruitful cooperation in this area. We especially want to prepare good staff that will power the new place. Silesian University of Technology has excellent facilities for education, we, in turn, have experience in the implementation of young personnel to the industry and the implementation of new technologies. This is our main mission – assured Dr Eng. Dariusz Prostański from the KOMAG Research Institute. The Institute also declares the possibility of using its experts for the process of educating professionals who will power the new factory.

Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Anna Chrobok, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Education of the Silesian University of Technology who was present at the signing of the contract, has no doubt that in agreement with DUMAT energy, a specially declared curriculum can be launched.

-We are able to launch dedicated education for the semiconductor industry. We want to take a pioneering approach to this and plan a microprogram within the framework of already existing study programs. Students will be able to apply for this program. If the company additionally funded scholarships for these people, we would have to ensure that the best, who will become well-qualified experts for the needs of the new factory, - explained Professor Chrobok.

The decision about when the program will be launched depends on how the negotiations between the Polish company and Taiwan regarding the construction of the factory will proceed.
