Global Capstone Design at the Silesian University of Technology

Silesian University of Technology has again become a centre of international academic cooperation, organizing the second edition of the prestigious Global Capstone Design 2025 workshops. The event started on May 26th, 2025, and is organized in the Project Based Learning formula.

Global Capstone Design attracts students and academics from all over the world, giving them the opportunity to work together on innovative solutions for the future of mobility. This year’s edition is attended by ten international project teams consisting of representatives of five partner universities: Silesian University of Technology, Opole University of Technology, Technical University of Košice (Slovakia) and five universities from South Korea.

The official inauguration of the event took place on the 26th of May at the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering, and Industrial Automation.

Global Capstone Design is an educational initiative that aims to develop international cooperation, work on real engineering problems and prepare students for the requirements of the labour market of the future. The workshops provide a unique opportunity to combine theory with practice – students from different countries jointly design and test innovative technological solutions that respond to current social, environmental, and industrial challenges.

Work on projects takes place in several stages: from problem analysis and market research, through the design and prototyping phase, to the presentation of ready-made solutions to a group of experts and potential investors. This approach not only develops technical competence, but also strengthens interpersonal skills such as teamwork, conflict resolution or communication in a multicultural environment.

The Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Marek Pawełczyk, welcoming foreign guests, confirmed that such events are aimed at strengthening student competences, which in the future will bear fruit in the labour market.

We already have experience in educating through the implementation of Project Based Learning projects, but we believe that cooperation with new partners from South Korea or Slovakia and the opportunity to work in international teams will give even better results. Students learn to look at problems from multiple perspectives and look for new solutions. I am convinced that this is an attractive teaching method, which in addition solves real problems – said the Rector.

Participation in Global Capstone Design gives students access to modern technological tools and the opportunity to establish valuable professional contacts. For many participants, it is also the first step to an international career in the engineering industry.

The highlight of the event will be the presentation of the work of ten international teams and the final competition, during which the best projects will be selected. Presentations are scheduled for May 29th, 2025.
