Easter meeting with students from abroad

Painting Easter eggs together, decorating Easter baskets, competitions and quizzes on Polish holiday customs and traditions – traditionally, the annual Easter meeting was held in an international group. Over 120 people from abroad who study at the Silesian University of Technology came to the “Spirala” student club.

Students literally from all over the world sat down at a common Easter table. The vast majority of them will spend Easter in Poland, away from their families.

– We want all our students to feel good at the Silesian University of Technology, like at home, which is why we try to bring our Polish Easter traditions closer to students who come to us from Europe and all over the world. We want to provide those who cannot return home for the holidays with care and a good atmosphere – said Prof. Dr. Hab. Eng. Anna Chrobok, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Education at the Silesian University of Technology

The meeting participants included both regulars and those like Mohamed Elmosalamy, a student of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering from Egypt, who has only been in Poland for a month.

– It was the first time I had the opportunity to participate in such an event, it was fantastic, I also really liked the atmosphere created by all the participants. I am happy that I could be here and learn so many interesting things about Polish culture and tradition, which I only started to learn about after my arrival, said Mohamed.

Foreign language teachers who teach Polish to foreign students on a daily basis made sure that while learning about tradition, they learned a few Polish phrases and words. Students could also win attractive gifts in competitions and taste Easter dishes such as żurek or cheesecake. And all this in a friendly atmosphere, full of laughter and kindness.

– There is an atmosphere at this university that makes people from different cultures come together, it is amazing and I really appreciate it – said Antonio Uele, a student of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering from Mozambique, who has had the opportunity to participate in similar meetings several times.

– We are incredibly moved that our students want to come here and are so interested in our culture – said Katarzyna Dudek, a lecturer at the Foreign Languages Centre of the Silesian University of Technology, which initiated and organizes the Easter meetings. – Students from abroad learn Polish in classes, but it turns out that the great added value is that they can come here, learn more about Polish customs and meet other students who are from all over the world.

The Easter meeting took place for the fifth time and was organised in cooperation with the Studies Service Centre and the International Relations Office - International Mobility Office.
