Remember about our planet throughout the year

On the occasion of the upcoming International Earth Day, the Faculty of Energy and Environmental Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology organized a unique event - the Earth Day 2025 Trailer combined with the Faculty Open Day. It was worth it, because the attendance exceeded the expectations of the organizers, and the youth actively participated in the proposed attractions.

Although International Earth Day falls on April 22nd, the organizers of the event deliberately wanted to celebrate this date a little earlier. Why? Because the future of the Earth depends on rapid action. We cannot wait for symbolic dates – we must act now, create innovative solutions, and implement technologies that will protect our environment for future generations. The Earth Day 2025 Trailer is a reminder that every day is a good day to work for our planet.

“The idea was born at our Faculty out of the belief that change begins with education, inspiration, and shared commitment. By combining the Earth Day Trailer with the Open Day of the Faculty of Energy and Environmental Engineering, we wanted to create a space where, above all, secondary school pupils will have the opportunity to learn about the latest solutions in the field of environmental protection and the prospects of studying at our Faculty.” – explains Dr Hab. Eng. Ewa Brągoszewska, Prof. SUT, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee.

- “Our Faculty combines subjects and goals related to the four elements – air, water, earth and fire. We carry out this on a daily basis in our research offer through projects, as well as didactic in the fields of study that we run. Therefore, we have prepared twelve activities for the participants combining these four elements” - explains the Dean of the Faculty Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Mariusz Dudziak. – “In this event, four new mascot symbols of the Faculty related to the above-mentioned elements also made their debut.”

The subject matter and formula proposed by the organizers were extremely interesting to the young people of secondary schools, who filled the hall at the opening, and later enthusiastically participated in twelve activities conducted by both scientists and students of the Faculty.

-“The attendance exceeded our expectations. More than 400 people signed up, so we had to divide the opening ceremony into two parts. We have prepared twelve different attractions for them. Pupils could visit laboratories, learn about what we do on a daily basis, talk to scientists and students, learn more about issues that seem to be crucial for the future of our civilization.” - says the Vice-Dean for Infrastructure and Organization Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Krzysztof Pikon.

Participants took part in lectures and demonstrations, such as “Hemp – green ecology, “Zero Waste: Smart approach to waste” or “Catch a bug” prepared by SKN (Student Club) “The Air Quality Team.”

- “We conducted workshops related to air microbiology. Together with participants we conducted an experiment on the effectiveness of protective masks, as well as a measurement using a six-stage Andersen impactor.” - explains Natalia Patoń from SKN The Air Quality Team.

Pupils actively participated in the activities prepared by the researchers and also had a lot of questions related to studying.

- “This is the best way to get to know the university. The topics of lectures and presentations were very interesting and important for us - young people. We could see and experience what scientists do on a daily basis.” - says Piotr Opała from the Academic Secondary Comprehensive School of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice.

- “I would like to thank all those who with great commitment and energy co-created this event – in particular, the activity leaders, employees, students, and PhD students of our Faculty. Their enthusiasm, creativity and passion for science made this event not only an educational but also an exceptionally inspiring experience" - says Prof. Ewa Brągoszewska,
