About the Silesian University of Technology at the EU Ambassadors’ Meeting in Malaysia

On February 14th, 2025, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM, Penang, US) had the honour to host a delegation of 19 ambassadors of the European Union countries, including the Republic of Poland, chaired by EU Ambassador Rafael Daerr. The Republic of Poland was represented by the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Malaysia Krzysztof Dobrowolski. During the event there was information about the cooperation of the Silesian University of Technology with USM WE.

At the meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Azlan Amran, declaration to continue working with valued institutions across the EU and participating in programs, including Erasmus+, that enrich learning experiences and broaden scientific and educational perspectives was expressed.

As part of the meeting, USM MY delivered a presentation on the current educational cooperation, during which there was also information about the cooperation of the Silesian University of Technology with USM MY within the GeoDRR project (Geomatics for Disaster risk Reduction), and more broadly with Malaysian universities.

In the GeoDRR project, Silesian University of Technology was a leader, and 2 Malaysian universities participated in it: Universiti Sains Malaysia and Universiti Utara Malaysia. The project was conducted by the Department of Geoengineering and Resource Exploitation at the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering, and Industrial Automation of the Silesian University of Technology.

Before the meeting, in consultation with the Vice-Rector for Science and International Cooperation Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Sebastian Werle, Dr Eng. Krzysztof Tomiczek (KGiES) and Dr Eng. Grzegorz Kłapyta (Head of the International Relations Office at the Silesian University of Technology) prepared - at the request of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland - full information for the Ambassador on the previous cooperation with Malaysian universities, cooperation resulting from the implementation of the GeoDRR project, post-project activities, project-related activities and activities conducted by employees of the Department of Geoengineering and Resource Exploitation and the Department of Safety Engineering.

The meeting among EU ambassadors with the USM authorities and representatives of the state administration took place in a friendly and constructive atmosphere.
Polish Ambassador to Malaysia Krzysztof Dobrowolski thanked for the information received and gave positive impressions resulting from it: “[…] We are very impressed with the scope of [note: Silesian University of Technology] cooperation with Malaysian universities.”
