Scientists of the Silesian University of Technology among the nominees for the Silesian Science Award!
As every year during the Silesian Science Festival, we will meet the winners of the Silesian Science Award. Among the nominees is a large group of representatives of the Silesian University of Technology.
The Silesian Scientific Award is granted by the universities co-organizing the Silesian Science Festival, and the winners are selected by the established Awards Committee of the Silesian Scientific Award.
The award is a distinction for those who make a significant contribution to the development of science and present outstanding artistic achievements, as well as promote Silesian science on the national and international arena.
This year’s gala of the Silesian Science Award will take place on December 8 at 19:00 on the Stage of the Rawa Valley (International Congress Centre in Katowice).
At that time, we will meet the winners from seven Silesian public universities: (Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music, Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, Jerzy Kukuczka Academy of Physical Education in Katowice, Silesian University of Technology, the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, University of Economics in Katowice, University of Silesia in Katowice and Jan Długosz University in Częstochowa. In addition, the award for the best PhD student and the Special Awards will be given.
Among the nominees are several representatives of the Silesian University of Technology:
- Dr Hab. Rafał J. Wiglusz – a specialist in nanobiotechnology – is involved in designing and obtaining new nanomaterials with specific biomedical properties for translational and personalized medicine.
- Dr Hab. Eng Sławomir Boncel - works on the synthesis and use of nanocarbons – nanotubes, graphene, and quantum dots – in textonics and medical teranology, heat exchange and storage and superlubricity.
- Dr Hab. Eng Dorota Burchart - conducts research related to the development of sustainable transport, alternative fuels in the vehicle life cycle and models of environmental footprint assessment in logistics and transport systems.
- Dr Hab. Eng. Marcin Basiaga, Prof. SUT - conducts research on the modification of the surface of implants and surgical instruments in order to improve their performance properties.
- Dr Hab. Eng. Jakub Nalepa, prof. SUT addresses both fundamental issues related to the design of artificial intelligence algorithms, as well as problems related to their practical use.
In turn, the Special Award of the Mayor of Katowice will be granted to Dr Hab. Eng. Grzegorz Wojnar, Prof. SUT. This award is granted as part of the Silesian Science Award and honours scientific activities for the benefit of the Katowice community.
Prof. Wojnar is the author or co-author of more than two hundred publications, including three scientific monographs, five academic textbooks, four patents, and has led many scientific and research and service works carried out at the Silesian University of Technology.
Professor Wojnar was also the Curator of the Katowice Week within the European City of Science Katowice 2024, the Chairman of the organizing Committee of the “I SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE OF THE BEST SCIENTISTS In THE WORLD – top 2%” has been the Chairman of the organizing Committee of the “International Scientific Conference TRANSPORT PROBLEMS” and the “International Symposium of Young researchers TRANSPORT problems” for eight years. The work of Dr Hab. Eng. Grzegorz Wojnar, Prof. SUT has been appreciated several times by three consecutive Rectors in the form of awarding prizes to the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology and is also awarded the medal of the National Education Commission.
In the category of doctoral students, the MSc Eng. Jakub Ochmann, who conducts research on the use of post-mining infrastructure as energy storage facilities, as well as the implementation of the Coal-to-Nuclear path in Poland has a chance to win the award.
