Sustainability in Social Media – the contest is over!
On 27 November, the Faculty of Organization and Management concluded the competition “Social media in shaping the awareness of sustainable development”.
The competition was implemented by the Department of Applied Social Sciences of the Faculty of Organization and Management of the Silesian University of Technology and the Scientific Club of Cognitive Technologies
“Cognitus” as part of the European City of Science Katowice 2024 in the City-Region-Academy band. The honorary patronage over the competition was taken by the Minister of Climate and Environment Paulina Hennig-Kloska, the Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship Wojciech Saługa and his Magnificence Rector of the Silesian University of Technology Professor Marek Pawełczyk.
The main goal of the competition “Social media in shaping the awareness of sustainable development” was to popularize among young people the idea of respect for nature and responsibility in using the natural environment. At the same time, the role of the competition was to draw attention to the importance of modern tools of social communication in the dissemination of these values.
“The competition was an essential element of environmental education and education for sustainable development. We were so excited that the competition turned out to be so popular. Young people sent films that were supposed to promote the idea of sustainable and we must admit that we have received excellent audiovisual material promoting this important idea. In addition, the materials were made at a very high level “. – admitted Dr Hab Aleksandra Kuzior, Prof. SUT, Dean of the of the Faculty of Organization and Management of the Silesian University of Technology.

The award-winning work referred to the work of Adam Asnyk. “The authors showed what the relationship of nature with man looks like and what the fact that unfortunately man destroys this nature can lead to,” she added. The film entitled “Love before It’s too Late” was made by a team from Środa Śląska.
In addition to the main prize, seven teams received awards. The awards were presented to the winners, among others, by Vice-Rector for General Affairs of the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Dr Hab Bożena Skołud.
“Habits that we acquire in our youth will stay with us forever, and the easiest way to reach young people is through social media, which is why important, engaging content should appear there,” said the Vice-Rector.
The winners had no doubt that the topic of the competition was important. The idea of sustainable development was presented in different perspectives.

“My video was based on a sustainable way of using social media. We are getting bombarded with a huge amount of news, and we no longer know what is true and what is a lie. I think my video could help us find ourselves in this information chaos,” said Magdalena Jamska, a student of cognitive technologies and social media, awarded in the competition.
The winners of the competition and all the participants could listen to the motivational speech of Marcin Prokop – a journalist and announcer, who talked about various ways of achieving success. He shared tips for young adepts of media work.
“Given that we live in a house that started to burn and sink, there is no more important topic to publicize in the media than those who young journalists and media workers should take care of first of all in order to save us from the climate catastrophe,” said Marcin Prokop. “Ecology is like war in Ukraine. It was so much said that people stopped paying attention to it, and they shouldn’t. In order to keep their attention on climate-related topics, we need to look for new ways of reaching recipients and new forms of communication, and this is the task for these young people.”

The media patronage of the event was provided by: "Dziennik Zachodni" and "Gazeta Wyborcza".
