The Silesian University of Technology at the Silesian Academic Sport Gala
Silesian University of Technology won the most important awards at the XIV Gala of Silesian Academic Sport, which took place in the theatre and cinema hall of the Youth Palace in Katowice. Impressive cups for victory in the general and medal classification in the Academic Silesian Championships were received by the Vice-Rector for General Affairs Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Bożena Skołud and the director of the Sports Centre of the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Krzysztof Czapla.
For the eleventh time in a row, our University is the winner of the general classification of the Silesian Academic Championships series, ahead of the University of Silesia and the Medical University of Silesia. The successes of our students also ensured winning in the medal classification.
In the twenty-first century, the Silesian University of Technology did not take the first place in the general classification of the AMS (Academic Silesian Championships) only three times, and last year it was chosen the most successful University in the 50-year history of this event.
-“This is a great success for the University and students. We were delighted to receive the awards. I am glad that our students, apart from working in laboratories or at computers, find time for their passions, for sport and it gives them a lot of joy” – says the Vice-Rector for General Affairs Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Bożena Skołud. – “It is a great advantage of the Silesian University of Technology, that by choosing a technical university, you can additionally train various sports disciplines, participate in science research clubs, enjoy tourism. Thanks to this, the youth often learn to cooperate in a group. In the United States, it has been observed that activity in sports teams translates into success in learning and later at work.”
In the previous season of the Silesian Academic Championships, our athletes took podium places in as many as 34 disciplines. They won 14 gold medals, 12 silver medals and 8 bronze medals. Representatives of our University stood on the highest level of podium in mountain biking, sports bridge, dart, rowing ergometer for women and men, basketball 3x3 men, men's skiing, chess, women's tennis, table tennis for women and men, hockey, men's sports climbing and sailing.
- “These successes are proof of the good work of the Sports Centre of the Silesian University of Technology and a great effort of students who can reconcile the demands of studying with the representation of the University. But it is fun for them. We start in 44 disciplines, so we have a lot of work to prepare as best as possible. We are supported by the University authorities, for which we are grateful. It is very important that they appreciate our effort” – explained the director of the Sports Centre of the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Krzysztof Czapla.
During the event, individual distinctions were also awarded. Among the nominees were Prof. Krzysztof Czapla (in the category of Activist of the Year), Dominika Gilewska and Małgorzata Włodarczyk (in the category of Sports Success) and Alicja Wojnarowska (in the category of Multi-athlete).
Let us remind you that our University also performed well in last year’s edition of the Academic Championships of Poland, in which students four times stood on the podium in the general classification, and in the classification of technical universities they won as many as twenty-two medals.
