A platform to analyze and foster the use of Green Travelling options
In the Green Traveling project implemented in the Spanish-Polish-Turkish partnership, the main goal was to develop a tool to support travelers in choosing the way of travel, but also to support local authorities in determining the right directions for sustainable transport development.
The Green Traveling project was carried out in 2014-2017. It has been financed from the means of the National Centre for Research and Development as a part of the international project within the scope of ERA-NET Transport III Future Travelling Programme “A platform to analyze and foster the use of Green Travelling options". The project was carried out in a research consortium led by Saitec Engineering (Spain), and the partners of the Silesian University of Technology (Poland), Factor CO2 (Spain), DeustoTech (Spain), and Mantis (Turkey).
The main goal of the project was to support "green travelling". The project is mainly aimed at electric cars (eV) and other eco-friendly ways of traveling (also public transport). As part of the project, on the basis of an examination of the existing condition and conducting development works, three main elements were developed in the form of the Green Traveling algorithm (GTalg), the Green Traveling interface (GTint) and the Green Traveling platform (GTplat). The algorithm is a key element and its preparation was the responsibility of the Faculty of Transport of the Silesian University of Technology. The implementation of the algorithm and the construction of the interface allows users (travelers) to use the project result to plan multimodal trips, also in the case of using an electric car (the latter is usually omitted in travel planners). The last of the above-mentioned results of the project is a platform addressed to managers and influencing traffic shaping in a selected area. It allows for the analysis of various scenarios of undertaken actions (e.g. the use of various types of incentives / motivators to use ecological travel).
As part of the project, Faculty of Transport of the Silesian University of Technology prepared the aforementioned key element in the form of an algorithm for routing multimodal travels and also took an intensive part in the implementation of several other project tasks. The start of the project was associated with the need to define, inter alia, distribution of travel in the analyzed area. In the case of Poland, travel analyzes were determined on the basis of research on travelers (questionnaires and research using modern technologies). This was due to the lack of current results and the high dynamics of changes in the distribution of travel flows in recent years in the study area.
