Study Visit to the Wastewater Treatment Plant
Field classes at the “Śródmieście” Wastewater Treatment Plant, belonging to the Zabrze Water Supply and Sewerage Company in Zabrze, provided students of the Faculty of Organization and Management with an opportunity to gain practical insight into the goals of the circular economy and the ways of achieving them.
The study visit first included a discussion of the technological and ecological aspects of how the facility operates, including the filtering and processing of waste. Then, the students participating in the project from the “Cognitive Technologies and Social Media” programme, divided into working groups, toured the equipment used for wastewater treatment.
During the classes, topics related to sustainable development, environmental protection, and the use of modern solutions in the field of the circular economy were discussed. There was also discussion about the principles of social communication in the promotion of water, soil, and air protection.
The facility, located in the Maciejów district of Zabrze at 10 Pestalozziego Street, is adapted for the treatment of municipal wastewater. Following the path taken by pollutants, the students toured the mechanical and biological sections of the treatment plant. The staff guiding them pointed out that, during the modernization, the hermetization and deodorization installations were rebuilt, filters were constructed, and a drying facility for dewatered sludge was built. In this way, the treatment plant can better fulfil its tasks by taking in raw wastewater and ultimately discharging treated water into the river.
