Scientists' Night 2024 - Lathe Operator Race as an example of integrating non-automated machines with the Internet of Things in Industry 4.0

The Researchers' Night in the European City of Science 2024 is a popular science event, carried out in the City-Region-Academy band as part of the celebrations of the European City of Science Katowice 2024. Scientists from the Department of Mechanical Engineering have prepared this year's event titled "Aj man, the lathe operator's race"

Introduction to the issue

The task "Turner's Race" presents a free look at the issues of INDUSTRY 4.0, the Internet of Things (IoT) and the digital factory. Approaching these issues with an open mind, you can see in the proposed solution the role of a programmable digital agent, allowing you to connect a manually operated device with networked digital systems that supervise production systems. The Internet of Things is a network of interconnected devices that can communicate with each other and exchange data. In the case of conventional machines, this means adding sensors and software that allow you to collect data about their operation and then send this data to the cloud.

The proposed solution is a partial solution to the problem, which can be developed into an advisory system that provides advice to the operator as a kind of feedback loop.

Task information

The Turner's Race is an interactive fitness game, during which the operator is tasked with carrying out activities related to controlling the machine and guiding it along a curvilinear track from the start to the finish position.

The station was prepared on a conventional lathe on which limit sensors and track line touch detection circuit were installed. The sensors have been connected to a microcomputer, whose task is to automate communication with the participant as much as possible during the task. For this purpose, dedicated software has been developed that allows you to manage the process, register data and process it in order to select the winners.

Presentation Course

The Lathe Operator Race was very popular among visitors.
Competitors divided into age categories fought bravely for attractive prizes in the form of Cups.

We would like to thank all participants, in the next edition we will try to make the stand attractive enough to include an AI element, and to provide appropriate prizes for the best virtual process operators.

We invite you next year.
