Prof. Artur Góra Awarded Professorship — “The Most Important Thing Is to Preserve Childlike Curiosity”
Prof. Artur Góra of the Silesian University of Technology has been awarded a professorship, one of the highest distinctions in the Polish academic system, recognizing outstanding scientific achievements and many years of contribution to the development of chemical sciences. As he himself emphasizes, curiosity about the world has been at the heart of his scientific journey from the very beginning—a quality he now encourages all young researchers to cultivate.
Prof. Artur Góra is affiliated with the Silesian University of Technology, where he conducts research in the field of chemical sciences. Since July 21, 2025, he has held
a professorial position at the University. He also leads the Tunneling Group, a research team focused on using computational methods to investigate the mechanisms underlying the functioning of proteins and enzymes.
Professor Góra’s research spans the fields of chemistry, molecular biology,
and bioinformatics. His work includes molecular modeling, protein dynamics simulations, the analysis of enzymatic catalytic mechanisms,
and the design and characterization of biologically active systems. He is the author
and co-author of numerous internationally recognized scientific publications,
and his research has applications in biology, medicine, and biotechnology.
When asked about the beginnings of his scientific career, Professor Góra emphasizes that it was not shaped by a single breakthrough event, but rather by a combination
of experiences and encounters.
“Curiosity about the world, the books I read as a child, books from my father’s library,
the need to solve problems independently, and the teachers I encountered at every stage of my education—from school, through university and my PhD, to postdoctoral fellowships—all had a tremendous influence on my decision to pursue a career
in science. The people I met and the support of those closest to me were equally important,” says Prof. Artur Góra.
Among the achievements he considers most significant, Professor Góra highlights
the research that formed the basis for the awarding of his professorship.
“The most broadly applicable are our studies on methods for describing the dynamics
of the interior of proteins using solvent molecules. I also consider particularly valuable our current research, which has led to the discovery of an inhibitor of human soluble epoxide hydrolase. At the same time, we are developing projects aimed at identifying selective crop-protection agents against pests, as well as investigating catalysis
at liquid – solid interfaces,” he explains.
Professor Góra points out that modern science faces challenges that extend far beyond the laboratory. Among the most important is the need to effectively apply scientific knowledge to global challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss. He also stresses the importance of combating pseudoscience, strengthening research integrity, and developing new approaches to publishing scientific results and fostering cooperation between academia and industry.
His most important message, however, is addressed to young scientists:
“Preserve your childlike curiosity for as long as possible, explore deeply, and constantly question and verify what you know. We live in times when falsehood can often sound more plausible than the truth. All the more reason for science to need people who are inquisitive, critical, and courageous enough to ask questions,” emphasizes Prof. Artur Góra.
Being awarded the title of professor is one of the most significant achievements
in an academic career and represents recognition of the highest level of scientific expertise.
