Research profile:

  • Degradation of antimicrobial drugs in the environment.
  • Methods for removing micropollutants from wastewater.
  • Advanced oxidation processes for water purification.
  • Use of sunlight in photolytic and photocatalytic processes.
Due to the high use of antimicrobial drugs for medical, veterinary and agricultural purposes and their resistance to biodegradation, these drugs are constantly detected in environmental samples. The reuse of wastewater for agricultural purposes is limited due to the ineffective removal of such micropollutants by conventional treatment methods. Limitations are related to the potential absorption and accumulation of drugs in crops irrigated with wastewater treatment plant effluent. For this reason, there is a need to search for effective and economical methods of removing antibiotics. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), especially heterogeneous photocatalysis, stand out for their high efficiency in degrading such micropollutants. For this reason, the aim of my research is to evaluate the degradation efficiency of selected antimicrobial drugs using photolytic and photocatalytic processes initiated by sunlight.
