Research work summary:
Irresponsible consumption of drugs is associated with the problem of their occurrence in the environment, and this is closely related to the phenomenon of drug resistance, which has a very negative impact on the living organisms including human. The same issues are connected to the antiviral drugs used in the treatment of COVID-19, especially those that are applicable in outpatient clinics. The presence of antiviral drugs in natural waterways is heavily influenced by epidemic cycle, antiviral drug intake, and environmental conditions. Common abiotic and biotic factors such as river water flow rate, sunlight penetration depth, water column depth, ttemperature, biological activity, turbulence, mixing, and rate of exfiltration and infiltration may all change dramatically depending on the consumption of the antiviral drugs. So, our research is intended to remove these anti-COVID-19 drugs from aquatic environment as natural water reservoir and WWTPs effluents that are mentioned to be the main source of these drugs in the environment. As a result, our research aims to remove these drugs ingested during the COVID-19 epidemic from WWTPs or natural water reservoirs in order to protect aquatic life and make water cleaner and to assess the susceptibility to degradation of selected drugs used in the treatment of COVID-19 in the broadly understood aquatic environment, using processes initiated by (artificial) sunlight, and to determine the impact of selected matrix parameters on the efficiency of degradation of these drugs.
