Profesor Balal from Pakistan, is a leading expert in waste management and environmental engineering. He earned Doctoral Degree from the University of Science and Technology of China (a Top 100 University).

Prof. Balal primary interest revolves around the concept of upcycling waste materials. He ventured into converting various kinds of waste – from biomass and municipal solid waste to sewage and plastic refuse – into invaluable products. These products range from energy, bio-oil, and industrial chemicals to carbonaceous materials, highlighting the depth and breadth of his work. The journey of transforming waste into value-added carbonaceous materials for environmental applications demands expertise in numerous fields. Here,  his vast knowledge encompassing thermochemistry, waste management, materials science, environmental & agricultural chemistry, and biology comes into play. His penchant for employing inter/multi-disciplinary methods to resolve intricate research problems sets him apart from others in the domain.

Before joining us, prof. Balal experience is augmented by hands-on work in waste conversion, materials synthesis, and soil and water treatment. A key focal point of his research was the creation of biochar – a carbon-rich material developed via pyrolysis.

Duration of stay at SUT is planned for 2 years to contribute to and collaborate on pertinent research projects.

Main topic of his work during stay in Poland is: "advanced techniques in waste upcycling and exploring new methodologies for biomass pyrolysis for production of carbonaceous materials for energy and environmental remediation”.
