Strong Representation of the Faculty at the EGU General Assembly 2026 in Vienna
Representatives of the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation of the Silesian University of Technology participated in the EGU General Assembly 2026, one of the most important scientific events in Europe dedicated to Earth, planetary, and space sciences.
The EGU General Assembly is the largest and most recognizable geoscience event in Europe. Every year, it attracts more than 16,000 scientists from around the world, a significant proportion of whom are early-career researchers. The conference program covers a broad range of topics related to Earth sciences, planetary sciences, and space research.
During this year’s edition of the conference, Prof. Marcin Lutyński served as co-convener of the session entitled “Advancing Multidimensional Energy Transitions: Modelling Renewables, Just Transition for Coal Regions, and Real Zero Policy Pathways”. The session focused on multidimensional aspects of the energy transition, including renewable energy modelling, just transition strategies for coal regions, and pathways toward genuine net-zero policies.

Prof. Marcin Lutyński, together with Konrad Kołodziej, also presented a poster entitled “Experimental Investigation of Gas Permeability of Concrete Lining and Membrane for CAES in Repurposed Mine Shafts”. Both the presentation and the poster concerned the results of research conducted within the HESS project, which aims to develop a hybrid energy storage system using post-mining infrastructure.

An important aspect of the Faculty’s participation in the conference was also the involvement of students. Konrad Kołodziej, as supervisor of the “Gwarek” Student Scientific Association, encouraged students Oskar Snarski and Wiktor Korpak to participate in the event. The students presented two posters:
- “Experimental comparative analysis of thermal energy storage beds using sigmoid function approximation”
- “Innovative, wireless system for autonomous monitoring of concentration of gases emitted from decommissioned mine shafts”.

The participation of the Faculty representatives in the EGU General Assembly 2026 constitutes an important element of the internationalization of scientific activity and the promotion of research conducted at the Silesian University of Technology in the fields of energy transition, energy storage, post-mining infrastructure utilization, and environmental monitoring.
Congratulations to all conference participants and authors of the presented works.
