Project description:
Ionic liquids find particular applications in environmental protection, but also in the field of polymer chemistry. Unfortunately, due to the good miscibility of ionic liquids with most solvents, their recovery and separation from the obtained polymer using classic separation methods is often ineffective.
The scientific goal of the project is to investigate the effectiveness of the use of electrodialysis for the recovery of selected hydrophilic ionic liquids from post-reaction solutions. The fundamental aspect of the research is to determine the impact of selected electrodialysis parameters on its effectiveness and, therefore, to develop the basis for solving the problem of recovery of ionic liquids from post-reaction solutions and purification of polymers (copolymers of N,N-dimethylaminoethyl and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate).
The implementation of the project includes conducting basic research. A tangible effect of the project will be the developed model of the transport of ionic liquids through ion exchange membranes, which will allow for estimating the efficiency of electrodialysis. The proposed solution, consisting in the simultaneous recovery of the ionic liquid and purification of the polymer, will enable the reduction of the use of environmentally harmful reagents.
