PhD Students from the Department Achieve Success at the Polish Chitin Society Conference!
The conference of the Polish Chitin Society, held in Katowice on September 23–25, 2026, was marked by significant scientific achievements of two PhD students from the Department of Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry and Electrochemistry – Łukasz Wujcicki, M.Sc. Eng., and Tomasz Mańdok, M.Sc. Eng.
Mr. Łukasz was awarded the Professor Henryk Struszczyk Annual Award, presented by the Polish Chitin Society in recognition of outstanding achievements in research on chitin and its derivatives, as well as their applications. As part of this distinction, he also delivered the inaugural lecture entitled "From Waste to Value: Chitosan-Based Sorbents for the Removal of Critical Raw Materials from Water", which opened the conference. This was not the only distinction he received during the event. Mr. Łukasz also won third place in the competition for the Best Scientific Poster.
Another success was achieved by Mr. Tomasz, who won first place in the competition for the Best Oral Presentation, presenting the results of his research entitled "Separation of Gallium from Aluminium Ions Using an Ion-Imprinted Cross-Linked Chitosan Sorbent".
The research conducted by the PhD students focuses, among other areas, on the development of chitosan-based sorbents and their application in the selective removal of metal ions from water and wastewater. This research contributes to the development of advanced sorption materials and the pursuit of solutions that support environmental protection and the recovery of valuable raw materials.
Participation in the conference provided an opportunity to exchange experiences, establish scientific contacts, and present the results of ongoing research. The distinctions received are a testament to the PhD students' commitment to advancing research on chitin and chitosan.
