Internship of Łukasz Piórecki at the John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre
In July, Łukasz Piórecki, BEng, a student collaborating with the Department of Data Engineering and Exploratory Analysis, began an internship at the prestigious John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre in Newcastle. He served there as a Technical Clerk in the COMPASS-NMD project.
The goal of the internship was to gain detailed familiarity with the diagnostic procedures for neuromuscular diseases and the tools supporting medical image analysis. Working on the project allowed Łukasz to develop his skills in machine learning and image data processing.
With the support of José Verdu-Diaz, MSc, Łukasz also had the opportunity to learn about the MYO-GUIDE project and join the team in implementing diagnostic solutions. During his stay in Newcastle, he visited the laboratories, where under the guidance of the researchers working there he became acquainted with the process of preparing histopathological and genetic data. The researchers comprehensively discussed the entire data collection process used for the ongoing projects.
