1945 | The birth of the Silesian University of Technology and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, which was founded by, among others, outstanding representatives of the Lviv school: prof. S. Fryze and T. Malarski. The newly established university was to educate engineering staff and create a scientific base for the Silesian industry. Initially, the university's name was: "Silesian University of Technology in Katowice with a temporary seat in Kraków". Lectures were held in the building of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków; however, there were no suitable rooms for lecture halls and laboratories, as well as for canteens or student dormitories. Better conditions were found in Gliwice. |
1953/1954 | A group of young research workers - headed by Stefan Węgrzyn and Zdzisław Trybalski - initiated the creation of the Seminar of Automatic Control. It was a forum for lively scientific discussions that integrated enthusiasts of the new field of science - automatic control. |
1953/1954 | As industrial plants were expanded and modernized, a new field of science - automatic control and industrial electronics - was becoming more and more important. In turn, the creative atmosphere of the Seminar of Automatic Control, during which innovative research was started in the field of, for example, the theory of transient states in electrical circuits, the theory of switching systems, industrial measurement, and industrial electronics, resulted in the establishment of a new specialty, "Automatic control and telemechanics", with a modern study plan. |
1961 | The industry's demand for automation specialists is growing very quickly. Therefore, the Department of Automatic Control was established at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, which could educate a larger number of students. Its manager was Prof. T. Zagajewski. At the same time, a new Department of Regulatory Theory was established, headed by Prof. S. Węgrzyn. |
1964 | Edmund Romer, Jerzy Siwiński, Zdzisław Trybalski, Stefan Węgrzyn, and Tadeusz Zagajewski formed the Team of Automation, which prepared organizational assumptions and study plans for a new, independent Faculty of Automatic Control. On February 15, 1964, the order of the Minister of Higher Education established the first independent Faculty of Automatic Control in Poland. There were over 30 academic teachers from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, including 2 professors, 4 associate professors, 6 assistant professors, and 18 lecturers. At the first meeting of the Faculty Council prof. Tadeusz Zagajewski was elected as the Dean of the Faculty. |
1964/1965 | The Faculty of Automation consists of 7 Departments - Department of Industrial Electronics (Prof. Tadeusz Zagajewski), Department of Regulation Theory (Prof. Stefan Węgrzyn), Department of Industrial Measurement (Doc. Edmund Romer), Department of Automation Devices (Doc. Zdzisław Trybalski), Department of Automation Industrial Processes (Doc. Jerzy Siwiński), the Department of Signal Transmission Theory (Doc. Adam Macura), the Department of Automation Devices Design (Doc. Edmund Romer, then, Dr. Henryk Kowalowski). The classes were held in the building of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at Wincentego Pstrowskiego Street (currently Akademicka 10 Street) and at Marcin Strzoda Street, where the Dean's Office was also located. |
1967 | The beginning of construction of the new building of the Faculty of Automatic Control. |
1967/1968 | Three new specializations appear at the Faculty of Automatic Control: Industrial Automation, Complex Control Systems, and Electronic Automation Devices. |
1969 | The number of departments at the Faculty is decreasing. As a result, the Department of Industrial Process Automation (J. Siwiński), the Department of Electronics (S. Malzacher), the Department of Comprehensive Control Systems (S. Węgrzyn), the Department of Automation Device Technology (H. Kowalowski) and the Department of Computer Science (A. Macura) are established. An innovative Department of Electronic Medical Equipment is also founded at the Faculty. |
1971 | The Silesian University of Technology is changing its structure to an institute-based one. The Faculty is facing another reorganization, as a result of which 4 Institutes are established: the Institute of Industrial Automation and Measurements (prof. J. Siwiński), the Institute of Comprehensive Control Systems (prof. S. Węgrzyn), the Institute of Design and Technology of Automation and Electronics Devices (prof. H. Kowalowski) and the Institute of Instrumentation and Medical Automation (prof. J. Kopka). |
1971 | Computer science at the Faculty is developing at a very fast pace. To emphasize its importance, the Faculty changes its name to the Faculty of Automatic Control and Computer Science. |
1973 | The construction of the new headquarters of the Faculty has been completed. This means excellent housing conditions and integrates the Faculty. More and more students want to study at the Faculty. The number of research workers is also growing. |
1974 | On the initiative of doc. J. Kopka, Dean of the Faculty, an Institute of Electronics is established, headed by T. Zagajewski. |
1975 | The development of informatics is gaining momentum. Prof. Stefan Węgrzyn is developing a study program and launching a new field of study - "Informatics". He also changes the name of the Institute of Comprehensive Control Systems to the Institute of Real-Time Informatics. |
1977 | The Institute of Automation is being created by merging the Institute of Industrial Automation and Measurements with the Institute of Construction and Technology. Prof. H. Kowalowski becomes its leader. |
1978/1979 | Staff and student numbers are at their peak. There are 160 adjuncts and assistants working at the Faculty, and 300 people come for the first year. |
1984 | Another reorganization of the Faculty, resulting in the creation of three Institutes: Automatic Control, Electronics, and Computer Science. The Faculty receives a new name - Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics, and Computer Science. |
1993 | Due to the adoption of the "Act on Higher Education", the names of the fields of study are changed to Automatic Control and Robotics, Electronics and Telecommunications, and Computer Science. Regular and part-time studies are offered at the engineering (bachelor's) and master's levels. |
1996 | Some courses are taught in English. |
1999 | Macro-field of Control, Electronics, and Computer Engineering (CEIE) is created, which is innovative on a national scale. The macro-field combines all three fields of study (Automatic Control and Robotics, Electronics and Telecommunications, and Computer Science). In addition, the studies are conducted exclusively in English. |
2001 | Branch offices of the Faculty are established in Rybnik and Sosnowiec. Students can study at the BSc level there. |
2005 | A group of students of the interfaculty study program "Biotechnology" appears at the Faculty for the first time. This field of study is developed in cooperation with the Faculty of Chemistry and the Faculty of Energy and Environmental Engineering. At the AEI Faculty, students study the specialization "bioinformatics". |
2007 | A nationally innovative field of study, Biomedical Engineering, is being created. |
2010 | The Faculty of Biomedical Engineering is established, which takes over the field of Biomedical Engineering. |
2013 | The field of Teleinformatics is being created. |
2019 | The Silesian University of Technology is changing to a department-based structure. The Faculty is reorganized, replacing the existing institutes, divisions, and teams with new 13 Departments:
|
2019 | The field of Informatics is also offered at the Faculty headquarters in Katowice. |
2023 | The program of the Control, Electronics, and Computer Engineering (CEIE) macro-field achieves the ABET Accreditation from the Engineering Accreditation Commission in the USA, which provides assurance that a college or university program meets the quality standards of the profession for which that program prepares graduates. |
2023 | Opening of the second headquarters of the AEI Faculty in the building at 13 Krasińskiego Street in Katowice. |
