CLIL Programme at the Faculty of Civil Engineering: 10 Years of Integrating Language and Technical Knowledge
On June 17, 2025, the final presentation of another edition of the CLIL programme (Content and Language Integrated Learning) took place, featuring second-year students from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology. This was a special, anniversary edition – the tenth one – carried out as part of English language classes in cooperation with the Faculty of Civil Engineering.
This year, the programme participants designed multilayer structural elements commonly used in civil engineering. Eight project teams prepared cross-sections of the following structures:
– a brick wall with insulation,
– a roof with a timber structure and roof tiles,
– the floor of a steel warehouse building,
– an asphalt road surface,
– a bridge deck (load-bearing slab),
– a ground-supported house floor,
– a green roof structure,
– a soundproof wall made of plasterboards (also known as gypsum drywall).
The presented models were the final outcome of a two-semester educational programme, which included not only learning specialist construction terminology and developing technical drawings of original designs, but also systematically enhancing language skills in the context of professional communication within the international construction industry.
This edition was supported by Dr. Eng. Wojciech Sorociak, representing the Faculty of Civil Engineering, who acted as the academic supervisor and collaborated with English language lecturers from the Foreign Language Centre – Ms. Iwona Seta-Dąbrowska, MA, and Mr. Janusz Sroka, MA – in delivering the programme.
The presentation was very warmly received by invited guests: Prof. Barbara Klemczak (Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering), Dr. Małgorzata Rachwalska-Mitas (Director of the Foreign Language Centre), lecturers from the FLC, and second-year students from the Faculty of Civil Engineering. Many attendees emphasised the relevance and value of the CLIL programme as a modern and practical teaching method that effectively combines language development with professional training.
We sincerely thank the Faculty of Civil Engineering for many years of fruitful collaboration, and the authorities of the Foreign Language Centre for their continuous support. We look forward with optimism to the next edition of the programme in the upcoming academic year.
