Environmental Biotechnology Section

The research scope covers a broad range of environmental biotechnology – from wastewater treatment technologies, through soil bioremediation, ecotoxicology, environmental monitoring, and molecular biology, to the neutralization of recalcitrant compounds. Work is also carried out on integrating biotechnological processes with other techniques, such as membrane technologies.

The studies focus mainly on biological and chemical hazards, including the removal of biotoxins, carcinogenic compounds, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and toxic by-products of chemical wastewater oxidation. They also address issues related to soil and groundwater, as well as the cultivation of microorganisms for the production of biofuels and other valuable substances.

In addition, typical research in the field of environmental biotechnology is conducted, including the removal of nutrients, treatment of wastewater with high ammonium content, assessment of microbial activity, and anaerobic processes.
