The field of study "Biomedical Engineering" was approved by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in 2006.
Already in June 2007, at the initiative of, i.a., prof. Ewa Piętka The Council of the Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics and Computer Science of the Silesian University of Technology adopted a Resolution on the launch of full-time first-cycle studies called "Biomedical Engineer".
Rector of the Silesian University of Technology prof. Andrzej Karbownik in 2008 appointed the Rector's Plenipotentiary for the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering - prof. Jan Marciniak, who is also the director of the Biomedical Engineering Center of the Silesian University of Technology. Under his supervision, a team of employees from the Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics and Computer Science (prof. Ewa Piętka, prof. Ewaryst Tkacz) and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (rof. Dagmara Tejszerska, Zbigniew Paszenda. Ph.D. and Marek Gzik, Ph.D.) prepared training programs , the organizational structure of the Faculty and the configuration of the equipment necessary for the implementation of the teaching process and research.
On this basis, the Senate of the Silesian University of Technology, at the request of the Rector, prof. Andrzej Karbownik, on April 26, 2010, adopted a Resolution on the establishment of the first Faculty of Biomedical Engineering at the University on May 1, 2010 and launching, starting from the academic year 2010/2011, full-time 1st and 2nd degree studies in the field of "Biomedical Engineering ".
