Project-Based Learning (PBL)
Learning Through Solving Real-World Challenges

During their studies at the Silesian University of Technology, students have the opportunity to participate in courses conducted using the Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach. It is a modern educational method that combines theoretical knowledge with practical solutions to real engineering and research challenges. The projects address current topics in the fields of engineering, advanced technologies, materials research, electronics, and optoelectronics.

Participants independently plan their activities, conduct experiments, analyze results, and present their developed solutions. Throughout the process, they enhance their technical competencies, teamwork skills, and creative problem-solving abilities.

Below we present a selection of PBL projects that will be carried out by students under the supervision of the staff of our Department:

  • Light That Feeds – Comparative Studies of Lighting Technologies for Plant Cultivation
Contact person: Prof. Erwin Maciak, D.Sc., Ph.D., Eng.
    email: erwin.maciak@polsl.pl

  • Monitoring Nitrates in Surface Waters Using Optical Techniques – A Case Study of the Kłodnica River
Contact person: Aneta Olszewska, Ph.D., Eng.
    email: aneta.olszewska@polsl.pl

  • Synthesis and Characterization of PVDF Layers as Receptors for Selected PFAS Compounds for Use in Environmental Monitoring
Contact person: Aneta Olszewska, Ph.D., Eng.
    email: aneta.olszewska@polsl.pl
  •
  • Development of a Portable VIS–NIR Spectrophotometer Integrated with a Smartphone for Mobile Analysis of Materials, Liquids, and Environmental Samples
Contact person: Patryk Radek, M.Sc., Eng.
    email: patryk.radek@polsl.pl

  • Raman Spectrometer Demonstrator as an Educational Tool for Visualizing the Operating Principle and Raman Spectrum Acquisition
Contact person: Sabina Drewniak, Ph.D., Eng.
    email: sabina.drewniak@polsl.pl

  • Small Retention, Great Challenge – Studies on Forest Water Reservoirs
A project carried out in cooperation between the Faculty of Energy and Environmental Engineering and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology.
Contact person at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering:
    Sabina Drewniak, Ph.D., Eng.
    email: sabina.drewniak@polsl.pl

  • Microplastics from Road Infrastructure
A project carried out in cooperation between the Faculty of Energy and Environmental Engineering and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology.
Contact person at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering:
    Sabina Drewniak, Ph.D., Eng.
    email: sabina.drewniak@polsl.pl

Participation in PBL projects provides a unique opportunity to gain practical experience, work with modern scientific equipment, and become familiar with methods applied in real engineering and research activities.

We encourage students to explore the proposed topics and join the community of young researchers and engineers who develop their interests through active engagement and the implementation of ambitious projects.
