Adrian Grzonka - Czas dopełnił dzieła (Time Has Completed Its Work)

The photograph depicts a wing of wooden doors in the entrance gate of the former prison on Prison Island near Zanzibar. The gates were presumably installed by the British in 1894 during the construction of the building, which was originally intended to serve as a prison. Ultimately, however, it functioned as a quarantine facility for the sick during a yellow fever epidemic. Today, the site houses a local historical museum. Tropical temperatures combined with the proximity of the ocean, resulting in high humidity, have caused the once solid wooden gates with metal fittings to transform into a decorative architectural element.
